For over a century Associated Humane Societies have offered a haven to abused and neglected animals. Founded in 1906, AHS is the LARGEST animal sheltering system in New Jersey. We operate three shelters located in Newark, Tinton Falls and Forked River. Our Forked River facility also includes Popcorn Park. Established in 1977, Popcorn Park is a sanctuary for abandoned, injured, ill, exploited, abused or elderly-exotic animals, birds, farm animals and wildlife (both domestic and exotic).

AHS is looking for an energetic, enthusiastic Director of Finance to oversee the strategic financial management of Associated Humane Societies. This position will be responsible for overseeing the financial books and records of a $10+ million non-profit animal welfare organization.
Current duties:
Guides financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing fiscal policies and procedures.
- Works in close partnership with the Executive Team to help plan, guide, and implement fiscal management strategies (i.e., budget planning, monitoring, analysis, forecast, investments, etc.) that help advance the mission of AHS
- Forges positive working relationships and partnerships across the organization to develop short-and long-term financial goals.
- Prepares and presents financial reports to the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors and coordinates the presentation of reports to the full Board.
- Oversees the preparation of monthly consolidated financial statements for the Executive Team.
- Evaluates current accounting software, policies and procedures and proposes any changes needed to improve financial reporting, including an implementation plan.
- Support the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors in all audit-related activities and coordinate the presentation of audit reports on an annual basis.
- Ensures financial compliance requirements with all funding sources are met.
- Ensures fiscal compliance with federal, state, and local legal requirements by researching existing and new legislation, consulting with outside advisors, and filing financial reports. Advises management of actions and potential risks.
- Oversees and coordinates all financial audits, including finance component of monitoring visits from funders sources, annual financial audit, 401K pension plan audit, workers compensation audit.
- Protects assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls.
- Follows all organizational and grant compliance policies and procedures.
- Executes all finance and accounting operations including but not limited to leading the annual budgeting process, monthly and quarterly revenue and funding projection process, restricted grant management and reporting, payroll, expense tracking, cash management, budget-to-actual Board reporting and the annual audit.
- Develops the annual budget with the Chief Executive Officer and other Executive Team staff for presentation and approval by the Board of Directors.
- Maximizes productivity from a financial service perspective, ensuring best practices, avoiding unnecessary risk, and promoting effective financial and administrative support and helpful service levels in areas of accounting, budget control, payroll, and other financial-related services.
- Oversees the development and evaluation of comprehensive accounting and financial record systems that implement best practices and are in compliance with regulatory agencies and other financial advisory organizations and committees.
- Oversees monthly, quarterly, and annual funding source financial reports, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Oversees all financial arrangements of AHS. Ensures adequate bidding procedures for major purchases. Oversees select vendor relationships.
- Oversees and controls proper management of AHS’ programs, including investments, mortgage obligations, 401(K) Pension, and other financial activities impacting budgets.
- Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates the performance of staff. Evaluates finance department structure for continual improvement of efficiencies and effectiveness.
- Evaluates employee performance and provides feedback and coaching to staff.
- Provides individuals with professional and personal growth opportunities where possible. Recommends salary adjustments, including raises, promotions, and reclassifications as needed. Consult with Human Resources as appropriate.
- Performs other duties as required to meet the needs of the organization.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related experience.
- Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in a similar role; 5 years working with a Board in a multi-funded not-for-profit organization; and 5 years of supervisory experience.
- Experience and skill in understanding program’s mission and services and connecting these with organization finances.
- Experience with accounting software and the evaluation of financial systems, policies, and procedures.
- In-depth knowledge of accounting principles and best practices, federal, state, and local laws and provisions.
- Knowledge of current and evolving trends and best practices in not-to-profit accounting.
- Exceptional fiscal and process management skills and knowledge of non-profit and fund accounting.
- Demonstrated leadership, strong supervision, and team management skills.
- Strong project management, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and oral communication skills and customer service orientation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.), accounting software, and other software.

· Qualified candidates should have 5+ years of non-profit accounting experience,
· be proficient in QuickBooks and
· have managed a financial accounting department.
· Strong analytical and organizational skills are required.
· Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
· Ability to guide, train and lead staff and board members in the appropriate development areas needed for success.
· Experience with and understanding of fundraising strategies – and ability to facilitate teamwork that supports diverse fundraising efforts.
· Ability to mobilize others to fulfill the mission and vision of the organization with passion and optimism.
· Ability to self-energize and to self-assess and seek to learn areas of the job that may require training and study to master.
· Knowledge of the social, philanthropic and business leadership of New Jersey.
· Ability to work evenings & weekends as needed

- Non-profit experience is extremely beneficial.
- MBA degree preferred
- CPA certification preferred

Pay: $73,044.66 - $120,000.00 per year
