As a Credit Counselor, you are responsible for providing debt management solutions to enable our clients to achieve their financial goals. A typical day includes conducting multiple credit counseling sessions that consist of reviewing a client’s credit report, expenses, income, and assets, and providing resources and educational materials to help them become debt free. As a Credit Counselor, you will:
- Assess clients’ overall financial situations by reviewing income, assets, debts, expenses, credit reports, and other financial information.
- Create budgets and calculate client’s available monthly income and ability to meet debt obligations to assist clients to meet financial goals.
- Recommend strategies for clients to meet their financial goals, such as enrolling in the Debt Management Program, making budget adjustments, and referring them to other services.
- Explain general financial topics and terms to clients, such as credit report ratings, creditor procedures, and money management.
- Explain services or policies to clients, such as Debt Management Program rules, advantages and disadvantages of using services, and creditor concession policies.
- Maintain or update records of client account activity, including counseling session notes, correspondence, and client inquiries.
- Recommend educational materials or resources to clients on matters such as financial planning, budgeting, and credit as well as social service or community resources for needs beyond the scope of financial counseling.
- Estimate time for debt repayment given interest rates and each client’s amounts of debt and available funds.
- Negotiate with creditors on behalf of clients to arrange for payment adjustments, interest rate reductions, time extensions, and/or payment plans.
- Teach credit education workshops on topics such as budgeting, management of personal finances, and/or financial literacy.
- Maintain current knowledge of credit regulations, National Foundation of Credit Counseling (NFCC) regulations, and company policies. Other duties as assigned.
Required:
1-2 years of customer service experience Must be able to build relationships by providing personal attention to each client with empathy and professionalism.
- Ability to motivate, influence, and help improve the client’s financial situation.
- Must enjoy helping others and maintain a positive attitude regardless of individual differences, styles, or personalities.
- Must have a stellar work ethic, which includes the ability to prioritize and follow through on work assignments as well as maintain good attendance.
- Familiarity with operating systems, Internet browsers and security settings, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- High level of technical proficiency, including the ability to type 25 words per minute, learn new software, and use multiple programs at once.
Preferred:
- 1-2 years of financial services experience (e.g., accounting, bookkeeping)
- 1-2 years of call center or sales experience
- 1-2 years of experience in counseling, social services, psychology, or coaching.
- Oral and written proficiency or fluency in a second language.
