The New York Harbor VAMC is seeking Mental Health Nursing Assistants with current Nursing Assistant experience to serve full-time at the New York Harbor VA Medical Centers. This is a hospital based environment and a passion to service our Nation's Veteran's.
Our VA Nursing Assistants perform care and assist medical personnel in the care and treatment of patients, including direct patient care. They perform a wide variety of duties aimed at increasing the comfort and mental health of the patient. They perform patient care and take measures to address the patient's bio-psychosocial needs, personal hygiene, physical comfort, nutrition, hydration, and safety. The nursing assistant will encourage patients to practice self-care and promote independence, while reporting to the Registered Nurse.
Duties Include but are not limited to:
- Assists providers and nurses in the performance of diagnostic examinations by performing duties such as monitoring vital signs, preparing and positioning the patient, or by performing a variety of routine diagnostic tests such as obtaining routine urinalysis, clean catch urines, and stool specimens.
- Assists physicians and nurses in the care and treatment of Residents. Observes and reports to the professional nurse changes in patient behavior, attitude, bodily complaints and appearance.
- Maintain a therapeutic environment for patients according to established procedures and policies by reporting actual or potential accidents, fire hazards and faulty equipment.
- Reports the condition of wounds and skin and any reaction to or results of treatments.
- Observes and reports to the professional nurse changes in behavior.
- Uses good communication skills in dealing with Residents.
- Provide a full range of patient care to complex Residents with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems including personal nursing care, support duties and treatments.
- Preparing Residents for transport to procedures by obtaining oxygen tanks or other needed equipment.
- Maintain Resident privacy.
- Performs direct patient support work including personal patient care and/or basic patient education.
- Cleans bedside tables, stocks linen, cleans wheelchairs and other direct resident care equipment using appropriate precautions.
- Other Duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Shift depends on selection and will be discussed at interview. 12 and 8 hour shifts available, Rotation may include weekend and holidays as needed.
Basic Requirements:
- Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens
- Education or Training: One year above high school with courses related to the [NA] occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3. IMPORTANT: A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education
- English Language Proficiency: NAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.Creditable Experience:
Preferred Experience:
- 2 Years of Nursing Assisting experience in a Mental Health is preferred
- BLS Certification preferred
