The Tool Room Technician role is based in Lake Zurich and involves providing support across various aspects of the organization. Reporting directly to the Superintendent of Tooling/CNC Machining, the position requires extensive expertise in injection mold repairs, machining fixture repairs, and preventative maintenance for various molds and fixturing. The ideal candidate should have a solid ability to work independently with a willingness to collaborate in small groups for larger projects. Self-motivation is crucial, along with the ability to proactively seek out continuous improvement ideas and practices.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Applies knowledge of various injection mold assemblies and familiarity with all components, steel types, etc., for the maintenance of injection molds.
- Manufactures components, inspection gauges, fixtures, etc., in adherence to approved drawings, utilizing available machining equipment.
- Responsible for machining custom components related to automation equipment, end-of-arm tooling, injection mold tooling, inspection tools, etc.
- Sets up and operates CNC machining centers and/or Prototrak CNC machining centers.
- Regularly utilizes common tool room equipment, including Bridgeport mills, lathes, surface grinders, welding equipment, band saws, overhead cranes, etc.
- Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains hot runner and hydraulic valve gate systems.
- Ensures the daily maintenance of 5S housekeeping and safety practices within the assigned workspace.
Education/Training:
- Active Journeyman Tool and Die Making certificate or equivalent work experience.
- Training focused on specialized mold maintenance, hot runner system maintenance, and related areas.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years of mold repair experience in a production tool-room environment is required. • Desire for experience in setting up and operating CNC machining centers or Prototrak NC machining centers, with a willingness to learn.
- Required experience in hand-fitting injection mold tooling post-weld repairs, including the ability to hand polish up to a 1200 grit finish.
- Proficient in operating common tool room equipment such as Bridgeport mills, lathes, surface grinders, welding equipment, band saws, overhead cranes, etc.
- Desired experience in troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining hot runner and hydraulic valve gate systems.
- Ability to thrive in a high-volume, fast-paced, and dynamic setting is essential.
- Positive attitude, strong attendance, and teamwork skills are crucial for success in this role.
- Ownership of necessary hand tools for basic tooling and fixture maintenance/assembly, including custom holding devices; specialized tools provided by Echo.
- Analytical skills to read detailed 2D and 3D drawings related to injection mold tooling, inspection fixtures, assembly fixtures, custom tooling, etc.
- Familiarity with CamWorks CAD/CAM software, driven by SolidWorks.
- Desired experience in precision TIG welding of pre-hard metals.
