NATURE OF WORK
This classification involves specialized and limited law enforcement and public safety work involving crowd control, traffic control, and the protection of life.
An incumbent in this classification is responsible for performing tasks of more than average difficulty involving the protection of life and property. After completion of an initial training period, the incumbent is responsible for enforcing federal, state and local laws, and performing related police activities. Under general supervision of a Police Sergeant or other designated supervisor, the incumbent is required to exercise independent judgment as well as tact, courtesy and self-control in performance of duties. The incumbent is also expected to make decisions calmly and quickly in emergency or hazardous situations. Reserve Police Officers will be assigned to work various hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. This classification is designated solely as part-time. This is not a full-time position.
Regular Rate: $31.54 per hour
Special Detail Rate: $40.00 per hour (Based on Assignment)
EDUCATION

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a G.E.D. diploma

PROOF OF HIGHEST LEVEL OF COMPLETED EDUCATION MUST BE SUBMITTED AS AN ATTACHMENT WITH APPLICATION. (Applications without attached proof of education will not be processed for consideration.)
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to meet all requirements of the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission

Current certification as a state of Florida Law Enforcement Officer

Must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Must obtain a valid Florida driver’s license prior to hire.

Must be in good standing from a Florida Law Enforcement Agency and have officially separated or retired by the time of hire.

Applicant must hold Active Florida Law Enforcement Officer Certification status.

All retired City of Sunrise Certified Police Officers must have been officially separated from employment with the City a minimum of six (6) months prior to application submittal

Reserve Police Officers are to be utilized for Special Detail Assignments or other Police Department assignments authorized by the Police Chief or designee.
DISCLOSURES

Reserve Police Officers shall not be considered as entry-level for regular full-time Police Officer positions and there should be no expectation that Reserve Police Officers will ever become employed as a full-time, regular Police Officer. Incumbents in this classification are not subject to the City pension plan nor are eligible for any City pension benefits. Reserve Police Officers positions are 'at-will' and are not subject to any of the terms included in the Fraternal Order of Police or Police Benevolent Association Collective Bargaining Agreements.

Incumbents are not permitted to serve in the capacity as a law enforcement officer with any other agency while serving as a Reserve Police Officer with the City of Sunrise.

Reserve Police Officers are required to work one Event or Assignment per month.

Reserve Police Officers will not be guaranteed any specific number of hours of work during any given day/week/month and will work a maximum of 24 hours per week. This classification is designated solely as part-time. This is not a full-time position.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work Environment:

Part-time work shift hours vary and may include nights, weekends and holidays. High degree of exposure to potentially hazardous conditions including inclement weather and severe temperatures. Officers may be subject to dangerous and stressful situations.
Physical:

A pre-employment medical examination and complete background investigation is required

Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl in the pursuit of suspects and/or in crime scene investigations

Prolonged carrying of articles weighing between 10 to 25 lbs.

Sitting, standing, or walking for long periods of time

Occasional squatting, climbing, kneeling, and running

Ability to operate city issued motor vehicles
Sensory:
-
Corrected visual acuity of 20/30 in both eyes; no marked red-green deficiency of color vision and no dimming of red objects; normal depth perception; no significant interference with night vision; no significant loss of peripheral vision; strabismus which is accompanied by double vision and not correctable. This will also include no hearing loss of greater than 46 decibels in the 3,000 cps range.

The ability to perceive and differentiate visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing. Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through personal contact, the use of the telephone and/or other City-issued technology devices.
