Phlebotomist Summary
The Phlebotomist, under the general supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor, is responsible for performing phlebotomy, electrocardiograms, specimen processing, waived testing, and reporting test results.
- High school diploma
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality
- Graduate of a phlebotomy or medical assisting program
- One year laboratory/medical experience
- Previous experience with Epic is preferred
- Previous experience in a clinic setting, ASCP certification, prior Epic and Sunquest experience is preferred.
Patient Services Representative Responsibilities:
- Receives lab orders from physicians and nurses via the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Performs phlebotomy including adult or pediatric venipunctures, finger sticks or heel sticks observing strict principles of antisepsis to prevent infection of patient and contamination of specimens. Collects and processes urine and throat cultures. Performs EKG testing.
- Performs technical laboratory functions including chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, immunology, and microbiology.
- Adheres to all laboratory policies and procedures for specimen handling and processing, patient test records, and test analyses including calibration procedures.
- Identifies adverse instrument and/or test system operation or performance. Takes corrective action and/or notifies laboratory supervisor of problem.
- Assists with daily and preventive instrument maintenance. Takes appropriate corrective action if test system is not functioning within acceptable limits. Accurately documents maintenance.
