PLEASE DO NOT APPLY unless,
- Unless you have thoroughly read the job posting.
- Unless you shine in the areas that are most important to our culture.
- Unless you are exactly or near exactly the person outlined below.
- Unless you have at least 3 years managing, leadership, coaching, training, and performance management experience.
- Unless you are going to contribute as much as you are going to expect.
- Unless you are consistent as the day is long through communicating, training and inspecting what you expect.
- Unless you are as crazy passionate as we are about what is important to our hotel family.
- Additional consideration will be given to those with experience in all or some; Hilton or Hampton Properties, OnQ or PEP PMS, Full P&L management, Revenue Management, Sales, F&B Development and Oversight, and are a part time motivational speaker… was the last one too much?
How you ask?
OK, I will be completely honest and give you all the answers up front. All I ask is that you don't apply if you do not meet the below expectations and are not ready to get very detailed on your experience, prior contributions and past efforts and provide references that back up your knowledge and level of passion.
Now lets get started:
While management is second nature, leadership defines you. Believe me, we will get into the management weeds during your interview. Will you need to have a good understanding of how to run a hotel, understand each position and be able to perform every task. well, yes. But only to better manage, motivate and support your team. I've always believed in two things: in order to be a good manager, you have to have walked in your teams shoes and in order to be a good leader you must be purposeful of others.
It's easy to determine your management skills and thought process in an interview. What is more important, harder to sense, and eventually teach is what kind of a leader you are. Really, the skills to run a hotel or this hotel are all transferrable. What do I mean? P&Ls, in a sense, are universal. With Revenue Management just substitute pricing/product and demand with your terms. Safety is always a concern for everyone, and you do not need special training to know when something is dirty or broken regardless of your prior experience.
My point is, these are examples of things you can tweak or learn. You don't necessarily have to be perfect at them now, we can help you with that later.
- What we need is for you to be naturally awesome at the things below that will define the direction of our culture.
You must drive customer service. Not like a Pinto, like a Ferrari. You just cant pass a guest without engaging. You feel every guest interaction is an opportunity to create a great impression, to uncover a sales lead and to really listen on how to improve the business.
You also know how to truly build a culture through your team. Friendly, polite, and efficient just doesnt cut it anymore. Its like a motel marquee advertising clean and comfortable? We have to be so much more these days. Our teams have to be knowledgeable, engaged and as passionate as we are. You understand that this process is both complex and simple at the same time. Be ready to share how you moved the needle through your team and how you were able to sustain the results.
We want you to care more about your employees next career move than your own. We want you to build your legacy by helping others begin theirs. We want to stop posting management positions and wading through hundreds of resumes that havent stopped and asked themselves am I the right fit culturally?. We want the next manager we hire (and every one after that) to already be someone who gets our culture, that wants to be a part of passing on what was passed onto them and has a deep desire to make our company a better place than when they started.
You must be a great teacher. At all levels: high school, college, post graduate. What we mean is that you understand everyone is different. They engage differently, learn differently and communicate differently. You have a history of mapping out success for a variety of team members. This must truly be a passion for you. Actually, this is probably where you get the most enjoyment in your day and where you wish you could spend most of your time.
You must let your Human Resource side shine. No not just the forms and legal side (though they are so important). Im talking about driving engagement and truly understanding performance management (yes, the positive side too). You already understand that consistency, accountability, and expectations are not negative terms. You understand that the first day, week, month is critical to their success, cultural fit, and eventual succession planning. That having a great mentor and trainer is the most important part of succeeding at the rest of their professional life.
