Job Title: Forest Resource Specialist (Part-Time with possibility for Full-Time)
Description: Baskahegan is a 100-year-old (5th generation) family company that owns 150,000 acres of sustainably managed timberland in eastern Maine. Baskahegan Company is seeking a part-time Forest Resource Manager, for roughly two to three days per week (16-24 hours per week). This position will focus on system and database management, reporting, forest inventory cruising, post-harvest assessment, assist the Vice President with consulting forestry tasks, material orders, as well as general office management, website maintenance and administrative support. This position will report to the VP & Woodlands Manager and is based in Brookton, Maine with the ability to work remotely as agreed upon by the Vice President.
The ideal candidate will have:
● A valid Maine Forester License a plus.
● Excellent organizational skills and the ability to multitask to complete a wide variety of responsibilities.
● Flexibility to adjust to new tasks should company or office needs change.
● Strong interpersonal communication skills to interact positively with all employees and visitors.
● Attention to detail to ensure tasks are completed thoroughly and correctly.
● Demonstrated Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel).
● Familiarity with the forestry business and wood measurement.
● Proficiency with database management a plus.
● Familiarity with QuickBooks and general accounting procedures a plus.
● Experience with timber cruising and forest inventory a plus.
● Experience managing annual certification programs (SFI, FSC, Tree Farm, etc) a plus.
● Degree or other credentials supporting the skills above.
This position will primarily be responsible for:
● Load accounting: technical support for bookkeeping, including reconciliation, file translation, and corrections.
● Issuing monthly volume reports to contractors.
● Assisting with the Company’s consulting forestry business, including pre-harvest planning and post-harvest assessment.
● Conducting inventory cruises as needed and collaborating with the Vice President on reporting requirements for the Company’s active carbon projects.
● Permits, leases and community relations: send bills and notices to lease holders, issue permits, draft and mail letters for lease and trespass violations, maintain contact information for adjacent landowners.
● Managing material orders (bridge supplies, culverts, etc),, and subscriptions.
● Phone calls as necessary.
● Obtaining and cataloging insurance certificates from each contractor and submitting to appropriate insurance providers when needed.
● Other projects as assigned.
Compensation: Competitive hourly rate, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
