Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA)
Description Occupational Therapist Assistants (COTA’s) are members of a multidisciplinary school team that ensures a free and appropriate education for students with disabilities to prepare them for further education, employment, and independent living. COTA’s provide expertise in improving, developing, or restoring functions impaired or lost, particularly related to seating/positioning modifications, handwriting, motor skills, organizing self and materials, promoting independence in self-feeding, and safety for students. The school-based COTA promotes motor development and the student’s participation in everyday routines and activities that are part of the educational program. Under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist, the COTA performs therapeutic interventions, including compensation, remediation and prevention strategies and adaptations, focusing on functional mobility and safe, efficient access and participation in activities and routines in natural learning environments.
Essential 1. Under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist,
Functions schedules interventions using a variety of service delivery models, including classroom intervention, consultation/collaboration and pull-out as appropriate to meet student needs in the least restrictive environment.
2. Applies a systematic workload model to facilitate the organization of the occupational therapy program within the school.
3. Provides direct support services to students, classrooms, and small groups that are comprehensive and data-driven
4. Addresses the needs of the school, student, families, and community by collaborating with Related Services Team and other staff to design a holistic approach to address barriers or problems with the educational process
5. Under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist, administers tests according to appropriate procedures
6. Provides input that assists the Occupational Therapist with completing written reports that are in compliance with Federal, State, and Local Agencies
7. Develops and provides professional development workshops as requested by the Student Services
Coordinator
8. Participates in family educational opportunities, including but not limited to Parent Empowerment Nights
9. Adheres to and supports Board policy, School guidelines, and administrative rules and directives
10. Maintains accurate case records and documentation
11. Maintains current knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations and abides by said laws and regulations with emphasis on persons with disabilities, child welfare, mental health, confidentiality, and student and parent rights
12. Participates in in-service activities and staff meetings promoted by the School
13. Performs other duties as assigned by the Student
Services Coordinator or School Director
Qualifications 1. Successful completion of an Occupational Therapy
Assistant Associate’s Degree, including satisfactory completion of required fieldwork experiences
2. Current Utah State Occupational Therapist Assistant license
3. Minimum 2 years experience in pediatric or school practice preferred
Reports to Occupational Therapist and Student Services Coordinator
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $25.08 - $36.55 per hour
Expected hours: 7.5 per week
