We are looking for a Veterinary Assistant/Receptionist to Join our team at Oakton-Vienna Veterinary Hospital in Vienna, VA! This position will REQUIRE you to be trained for 2 different roles in our hospital where you will be working reception shifts infrequently, with the majority of shifts as an assistant. We are not hiring for one or the other.
Reports To: Practice Manager
Starting Pay Rate: $18.50 - $21.00/hour
Job Type: Full-time/Part-time once trained
Schedule:
- Monday to Friday, and every other Saturday
- 1-2 shifts per week will be evening receptionist shifts and the other shifts will be as an assistant
- MUST be able to work a mix of evening and morning shifts, primarily evenings

Veterinary Assistant Job Responsibilities:
A veterinary assistant/receptionist provides animal care by collaborating with our medical team and receiving instructions from DVMs and pet owners. Must care for all cats and dogs equally, no matter the breed. As well as treat all clients with compassion and respect.
Core Responsibilities*:
- Holding the same values as our team; providing compassionate care, good customer service, and expert knowledge to owners
- Ensuring that clients and pets feel welcome and comfortable
- Assisting veterinarians during appointments to provide compassionate nursing care
- Getting blood for lab work, giving injections, administering subcutaneous fluids, taking x-rays, and basic grooming
- Cleaning, maintaining, and preparing supplies and equipment
- Maintaining accurate medical records
- Filling prescriptions as directed by a veterinarian, and explaining prescription directions
- Assisting with check-in and checkout procedures, scheduling, and providing telephone support
- Performing various laboratory tests
- Suggesting dietary products, vaccines, and other services to clients
- Keeping our facilities clean and well maintained
- Performs other duties as assigned to keep the hospital running smoothly
- Faxing, emailing, and requesting information from other hospitals
- Scheduling appointments and surgeries
- Administrative work such as dealing with deposits, compiling paperwork, scanning in records
- You will be answering the phone and coordinating communication among clients and the hospital team
Desired Knowledge:
- Basic animal restraint, grooming, and basic medical care preferred
- Medical terminology is a plus!
- Eagerness to learn about the field or relevant education
Desired Skills:
· Familiar with AVImark medical software preferred
· Customer service experience is required
· Familiar with Microsoft Office
· Computer and technology savvy

Additional Requirements:
- Must frequently lift 40 pounds

- Must be able to work in an environment with exposure to disinfectant/sanitation chemicals, animal dander and excretions
- Must be able to work under stress and pressure, at times
