One of the best parts about working for the Legislative Services IT team at the State of Utah is the reach your work will have within state government. We are looking to expand our team of developers and programmers to help with the many software and web projects happening within the Utah Legislature. The work our development team does is foundational to enabling our legislative work to move forward effectively and successfully. We’re looking for a Junior Software Engineer to join our growing development team! The Junior Software Engineer will be able and willing to work with a team of developers on existing and new projects ranging from desktop and web apps, to updating legacy software. An eagerness to learn the complexities of the legislative process is a must. The Junior Software Engineer is an entry level position with the Legislative Services IT office and works under close supervision by the Legislative IT Deputy Administrator of Software Development and mentorship of Senior Software Engineers. This is a non-partisan position, and the incumbent must be able to work extended hours and on weekends as needed, especially while the Legislature is in session.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Coding/Development: Writing code based on provided specifications, design documents, and discussions with senior team members. This includes implementing new features, fixing bugs, and improving existing code.Testing: Basic testing to ensure code quality and reliability. This might also involve participating in code reviews to provide feedback on other team members' code and will include assisting with test plans for Quality Assurance staff.Documentation: Documenting code, processes, and procedures to aid in understanding and maintenance. This could include writing API documentation, technical specifications, or user guides.Collaboration: Working closely with other team members, such as software engineers, designers, project managers, and quality assurance testers, to understand requirements, solve problems, and deliver high-quality software.Learning and Development: Continuously learning new technologies, tools, and best practices to improve skills and stay current in the field. This might involve self-study, attending training sessions, or participating in company-sponsored learning programs.Support: Providing support to users or clients by troubleshooting issues, investigating bugs, and implementing solutions in a timely manner.Code Maintenance: Participating in code maintenance tasks such as refactoring, optimization, and performance tuning to improve the overall quality and efficiency of the codebase.Version Control: Using version control systems like Git to manage code changes, collaborate with team members, and track project history.Agile Processes: Following agile development methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban, participating in sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives to ensure timely delivery of features and continuous improvement.Communication: Communicating effectively with team members, stakeholders, and sometimes clients to provide updates on progress, raise concerns, and gather feedback.
