PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENT
The successful new hire or rehired candidate will be responsible to complete and incur the fingerprinting and processing fee of $54.50 through an appropriate fingerprinting vendor and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, within 48 hours of offer acceptance.
RESPONSIBILITIES
SUMMARY: Provide the leadership, guidance, and supervision necessary to insure that District vehicles and equipment are maintained and repaired safely, effectively, and efficiently.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
R-28 All of the below including Passed and maintained current the appropriate Master Certification from Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) for their shop and equipment/job type (i.e., School Bus, Medium Duty Truck, Body Shop, etc.)
R-27 All of the below
Record shop activities on computerized information system and extract needed information from system. Work with Transportation and other District personnel to achieve maximum vehicle availability.
Diagnose vehicle problems and/or damage to determine proper corrective measures. Estimate repair times, parts, and equipment needed to complete repair. Assign work on priority basis.
Supervise repairs and inspections of District vehicles. Insure that inspections are performed in a timely manner. Supervise annual state inspection of buses. Inspect completed work for accuracy and thoroughness.
Requisition needed parts. Obtain quotes and issue purchase orders up to $500 for non-stock parts, supplies, etc.. Maintain stock parts inventory and accurately record receipts issues, transfers, etc..
Instruct mechanics in proper methods/procedures. Evaluate mechanics and recommend training, promotions, and discipline to supervisor. Assist with interviews/selection of mechanics and other staff.
Monitor and enforce shop safety standards.
Ensure that District vehicles are in compliance with applicable motor vehicle laws and regulations.
Work with vendors to solve parts, warranty, and operational problems. Keep abreast of new developments in products related to vehicle maintenance through vendors, training, etc.
Supervise emissions inspections of District vehicles utilizing applicable knowledge of state A.I.R. and/or opacity inspection program regulations.
Respond to emergency situations and work flex shifts/hours as needed.
Maintain fuel inventory, including monitoring fuel levels, ordering, and keeping accurate records. Repair automated fuel system components as needed.
Maintain hazardous material inventory and Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) data. Monitor use and disposal of hazardous products, wastes, and materials.
Comply with controlled substance and alcohol testing as required by state, federal, and District policies.
Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma/GED required, plus specialized technical courses in business, vocational school, or community college equal to 2 years of college related to a trade or skill.
EXPERIENCE: Three years experience in supervision of heavy duty mechanics, five years as a heavy-duty mechanic.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT: Background in mechanics and supervision. Basic computer and human relations skills and knowledge. Operating knowledge of the following equipment must be acquired within three months after hire: District vehicles and equipment, computers and related software, and special diagnostic equipment.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: The following must be acquired within three months after hire: Commercial Driver's License (CDL), pass a pre-employment physical, CDE Brake, Air Emissions, Opacity, and Air Brake Certificates.
Person with a job required CDL are subject to random drug screenings, and must meet all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse requirements. This may include registering with the Clearinghouse and consenting for the City to perform a limited and/or full query as defined by the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.
SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY: Spends over 75% of time conducting supervisory responsibilities. Directly supervises 3-6 employees in the Transportation Department. Title supervised includes Fleet Services Mechanic. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; and addressing complaints and resolving problems. Assists with disciplining, interviewing and hiring. Acts as a technical resource by instructing and training shop personnel, supervisors, drivers, operators, trainers, and Service Specialists in technical areas related to vehicle/equipment operation and maintenance.
CONTACTS: Daily contact with persons within/outside of unit/building and vendors to resolve problems; with the public to provide a service; and with other districts to furnish/obtain information. Annual contact with applicants for routine matters.
SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS: Medium exposure to self and co-workers to bruises due to falls/slips and tools, cuts due to metal edges, chemical burns due to battery acid, heat burns due to hot engines, fractured bones due to falls/slips, hernia due to lifting/pulling/pushing heavy objects, loss of limb due to equipment failure, loss of sight due to chemicals or equipment failure, and disfigurement or fatality due to driving and/or equipment failure.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
MENTAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to compare, analyze, communicate, copy, coordinate, and use interpersonal skills. The employee is frequently required to evaluate. The employee is occasionally required to instruct, compute, synthesize, compile, and negotiate.
JUDGMENT AND DECISION-MAKING: Work is assigned by Fleet Manager or Director of Transportation. This position requires application of technical knowledge to determine whether a District vehicle is safe to be operated on public streets. An error in decision making could lead to accidents/fatalities involving students, employees, and/or the public. Decision-making requires collaboration with all departments that operate District vehicles. Supervisor/manager is involved only in major decisions. Work is guided by Board policies and state and federal regulations.
