EL (English Learner) Services Curriculum Coordinator

Summary:
The EL Coordinator leads the EL Department and the coordination of EL services (Kindergarten-12). This includes providing professional development to teachers, classified, and casual employees on best practices as related to teaching EL. This would include small group instruction and other instructional strategies for all teachers grades PreK-12. The EL Coordinator also collaborates with the Learning Director to share leadership in the development, articulation, and implementation of an effective instructional program and assists in the coordination of staff professional development that aligns with EL best practices.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Oversee the school-wide screening of Home Language Surveys in collaboration with Registrar.
- Coordinates the assessment of student eligibility in the EL program.
- Guides the professional learning process for teachers toward the achievement of established school curriculum goals, establishes and communicates clear objectives to support quality instruction for all students.
- Coordinates the administration of WIDA assessments, including scheduling, test administrator training, materials management, ensuring accessibility, technology setup, and reserving testing space.
- Monitors academic progress of active and monitored ELs.
- Coordinates family engagement activities for EL families.
- Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by the law, District policy and administrative regulation. This includes student file maintenance, test coordination, student identification, support coordination, and report completion.
- Provides support for all EL teachers when concern regarding student progress, behavior, and/or social-emotional needs arise and
- Collaborates with instructional staff to provide language support when appropriate.
- Models instructional, evidence-supported strategies for teachers that align with school-wide goals for student learning and achievement.
- Manages the schedule for EL teachers, staff, and students to maximize student achievement and provide students with optimal English Language Development services.
- Effectively manages and oversees Bilingual/Bicultural School-Home Assistants and EL Educational Assistants..
- Leads in-service and staff development activities and staff meetings as required or assigned.
- Attends established traditional school-sponsored activities (i.e., back-to-school night, open house, and other activities customarily attended by classroom teachers and/or faculty members.)
- Assure coverage for IEP, Section 504, or other related meetings necessary for student assessment and/or compliance with federal and/or state law. Also coordinates with school level and or district level translators to attend meetings as needed in coordination with the SSC.
- Collaboration with the Special Education Vice Principal, SSC, and special education teachers to address the needs of dual-identified (EL and special education) students through professional development and teacher support.
- Monitor the use of EL teachers' formative and summative assessment to measure growth toward learning goals.
- Demonstrate cooperation, openness for growth and willingness to contribute to a team approach to the educational program.
- Support with monitoring pacing guides, collaborating with colleagues and administration when adjustments are required.
- Searches for and shares opportunities with the entire school staff as related to meeting the state’s Sheltered Instruction Qualification (SIQ) requirement.
- Stays current on updates to SIQ requirements, relays those to staff, and supports staff in registering for opportunities to complete SIQ requirements.
- Maintain and further develop school wide systems to benefit EL student intake procedures and improve the home/school connection for EL students and families.
- Monitors implementation strategies and student data and refines professional development as needed.
- Plans for and places curriculum and instructional materials orders.
- Organizes opportunities for students to participate in off-campus learning and field trips (ex., Micronesian cultural festivals, Hawai’i Language Roadmap Career Day, etc.).
- Coordinate Seal of Biliteracy qualification for eligible students, including Avant STAMP Test administration.
- Attends meetings related to supporting ELs and fostering strong instruction schoolwide (ex., MTSS, CIA, teacher support meetings, etc.).
- Perform other duties that may be assigned as related to EL services and support.
- Attending bi-weekly School Leadership meetings and relating information to EL department
- Planning for Grade Level Business (GLB) meetings
- Completing Purchase Order requests from teachers through the Business Office
- Collaboration on common supplies (systems within cluster)
- Supporting grade level teams to be successful through addressing and responding to team member needs in a timely manner.
- Providing special care and extra support for new teachers to the department or the school. This includes extra support at the beginning of the year and throughout.
- General communication (daily updates, last minute changes, etc.)
- Ensure that grades are provided by colleagues for transferring students
- Adjusting schedules for special programming (Art Bento, AITS, Bike Ed, Art Residencies)
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current State of Hawaii Teacher Licensure.
- Masters Degree in Education, Teaching or a Second Language Study related field.
- Experience in a leadership role at the school or district level.
- Successful five (5) years of teaching experience
- Strength in collaboration, clear communication, and maintaining positive relationships with school staff.
- Expertise in teaching foundational reading skills to lower elementary students.
- Demonstrated success in a leadership role at the school or district level.
- Skill and ability to utilize technology to aid instruction, assessment and learning.
- ExcELent organizational and neatness skills; ability to keep concise records.
- Sensitivity to the developmental stages and wEL-being of children.
- Willingness to be flexible in terms of teaching assignment within the school setting.
- Ability to effectively communicate with parents, students, and staff verbally and in writing.
- Ability to use appropriate assessment, instruction, and evaluation techniques.
- Ability to utilize effective practices to build a community of learners.
- Commitment to collaboration and leadership.
- Knowledge of child and adolescent development and ability to apply that knowledge to the selection and application of curriculum materials and instructional practices.
- Experience working in Hawaiʻi schools.
- Knowledge and evidence of successful implementation of Hawaiian Culture Based Education and/or Ola Kamaile practices.
- Experience working with EL students from areas such as Polynesia and Micronesia.
- Commitment to participate in professional growth opportunities and reflection.
- Reliability in attendance, punctuality, and follow-through.
- ExcELent command of the English language.
- Familiarity with WIDA assessments.
Desired Qualifications:
- Doctorate degree in Education/Teaching or TESOL.
- Demonstrated content knowledge and research-based instructional strategies for EL students.
- Certified in the area of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages K-12.

Pay: $51,835.00 - $97,943.00 per year
