JOB SUMMARY:
Provides journeyman level work in the installation, maintenance, and service of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC) systems, including Centrifugal Chillers and Pumps, VFD’s, Boilers, Water Treatment Controllers, Kitchen Equipment, EMCS Control Systems, Air Handling Units, DX Systems, etc. Responsibilities include prompt performance of assigned HVACR and related duties.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Analyzes and resolves issues with electronic and pneumatic controls. In addition, maintains the control systems for air conditioning ventilation, heating and refrigeration equipment.
- Inspects and repairs all HVAC equipment and facilities which includes waterlines, valves, drive belts, steam traps, chillers, boilers, pumps, swimming pools, cooling tower, etc.
- Cleans cooling tower basins, traps, and flood decks. In addition, breaks down boilers and prepares for inspection.
- Troubleshoots repairs and maintains kitchen equipment to include icemakers, walk-in freezers and coolers, reach in coolers and freezers, convection ovens, exhaust hoods, steamers, and all related equipment.
- Maintains accurate water balance and temperature in cooling towers, closed loops and swimming pools. Keeps a daily maintenance log on all operating chilled water and water treatment equipment.
- Cleans, repairs/replaces and maintains DX central systems, i.e. soldering, brazing, pipe fitting, refrigerant recovery, etc.
- Replaces air filters/efficiency bags on all air handling units.
- Provides guidance and training in HVAC work to apprentices and other maintenance personnel. May have lead responsibility for special projects; assists in ordering materials for shop. Prepares estimates of time, labor, and materials.
- Maintains, repair and replaces underground steam and condensate distribution systems.
- Maintains and repairs energy management control systems network i.e. control boards, relays, sensors, valves, etc.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- 8000 hours experience as an apprentice.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Completion of Technical HVAC Training.
- More than four years in HVAC field.
REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Texas driver license. Must be insurable through the organization’s insurers.
- Must have a valid Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) Certified ACR Technician License or a City of San Antonio HVAC Journeyman’s License and a recognized and approved Universal EPA Refrigerant Recovery License, which must be kept current at all times.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of electrical safety practices; International Building Code, International Plumbing Code, International Mechanical Code, Texas Boiler Law, National Electrical Code (NEC), National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), National Labor Standards Council (NLSC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
- Knowledge of recognized local and state electrical requirements.
- Ability to distinguish between colors and work from elevated heights (ladders, scaffolding, etc.
- Ability to read and write English and ability to follow written and oral directions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, faculty, and the public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Required to lift up to 75 lbs. alone and move up to 1,000 lbs. with help. May be required to work in attics and under buildings; subject to electrical, mechanical, and chemical hazards and/or inclement weather conditions; may be exposed to dust and fumes. Must use required Personal Protective Equipment. This position requires emergency response duties on a 24/7 basis.
