Job Description: Surgical/SPD Technician
Position Overview
The Surgical Technologist is a trained to assist the Physician in rendering professional care to patients undergoing procedures. Works under the direct supervision of the Physician. Functions cooperatively with physicians and staff. Must be willing to train in Sterile Processing Department.
Qualifications
- Must have high school diploma or equivalent and graduate of an accredited school in surgical technology
- Must have current BLS certification
- Must have experience operating c-arm
- Must be able to retain knowledge of identification and necessary handling requirements of surgical instruments and medical supplies and equipment
- Must be able to understand, speak, and write English well to communicate with the nursing, technical, and medical staff
- May be expected to lift twenty-five pounds without assistance
- Will be expected to obtain assistance moving patients when needed
Responsibilities
Duties will consist of, but not be limited to:
- Helps Circulating Nurse open sterile supplies and prepares for each operative procedure
- Assists surgeons as scrub tech according to prescribed standards
- Sets up table, instruments and supplies according to the type of procedure
- Assists and anticipates the needs of the surgeons
- Maintains correct count of sponges and needles with Circulator
- Always maintains aseptic technique as dictated by accepted standards
- Assists in maintenance and care of specimens
- Assists in application of dressings, and in moving patients
- Maintain awareness of safety hazards and use of equipment to prevent damage or harm to personnel or patients
- Assists in inventory of supplies and equipment to assure availability and maintain set level and notifies Lead Tech or Nurse Manager to reorder
- Knows where all supplies are kept and can get or put away accordingly
- Assist with emergency procedure as required
- Provides and makes available all supplies for the next surgery day
- Decontaminates all equipment, instruments, and supplies and cleans room as directed in procedure
- Receives soiled or contaminated supplies and instruments from patient care areas
- Determines the best method of cleaning, wrapping, and sterilizing a variety of medical and surgical instruments, equipment, and needles
- Assembles surgical instrument trays and pans and delivers sterilized items to the operating room
- Properly operates cleaning and sterilization equipment such as washers, sterilizers, and sonic cleaners
- May collect needles and sharp containers from O.R. for proper disposal
- Monitors all sterilization equipment by testing and recording indicators
- Assists in training staff in the identification of surgical instruments and individual pans
- Prioritizes assignments and adjusts workflow to meet the most important needs
- Performs additional activities/duties as required and directed
- Participates in training, orientation, in-service, and staff development programs
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour
