Job Description:
Our Veterinary Technicians are the heartbeat of day to day operations. They are responsible for assisting the Doctor through their cases, checking on patients, running procedures of their own, and aiding Doctor Assistants (DA’s) with the clients they work with. A typical day can range from running blood work to discussing treatments with patient owners. Below are some of the categories of duties that an ideal candidate would learn to master:
Clinic Operations
- Collects specimens for out-of-house lab assessment – including cytology, smears, swabs
- Performs routine in-house lab procedures including urinalysis (collection, microscope analysis, dipstick testing, pH testing), PCV check, running lab machines for hematology (i.e. CBC) and biochemistry, ear smear cytology, skin scrapes
- Dispenses and administer medications and vaccines
- Carry out treatments (medication, fluid pump set up) as prescribed by veterinarian(s)
- Takes radiographs – including proper labeling, attaching to records and sending them to the client
- Prepares patient for surgery or hospitalization (often without assistance) – including: drug calculations, drug administration, IV catheter placement, surgical prep (i.e. shaving and disinfect surgical area)
- Monitors patients under anesthesia – including filling anesthetic sheets and attaching it to patient records
- Completes dental cleanings with extractions independently or with little interaction with the Doctor
- Maintains the practice philosophy for attracting new clients and retaining existing clients
- Facilitates resolution of client problems (and if too difficult, informing practice manager)
Customer Relations
- Presents estimates to client with minimal assistance from the Doctor
- Explains complex treatments to clients and help Doctor Assistants explain treatments
Hospital Operations
- Ensures practice medical standards are met (as outlined in VMB compliance document).
- Ensures DEA compliance (e.g. proper recording of drug logs)
- Ensures OSHA compliance (e.g. proper labeling of hazardous material)
- Establishes/organizes/manages an inventory control system to assure adequate stocks of medical supplies
- Services and maintains medical devices (Laboratory Analyzers, Microscope, Dental Unit, Anesthetic Machine
- Maintains dental machine daily; all other medical devices as needed
- Cleans, maintains and sterilizes instruments, equipment, and materials
Qualifications
- Minimum 3-10 years of experience in veterinary clinics
- RVT Certification nice to have but not necessary
- Proactive and independent, does not need to be micromanaged
- Ability to complete work independently
- Detail-oriented and motivated to complete projects in a timely manner
- Dependable. Punctual and reports to work when scheduled
- Impeccable work ethic
