Job Summary:
The Principal Electrical Engineer leads the design and development of complex electric systems on a wide range of products. The right candidate for this position independently accomplishes challenging projects and technical leadership with minimal supervision. Responsibilities require the application of engineering experience and comprehensive knowledge of academic principles. The position supports multidisciplinary teams in electrical analysis, design, schematic drafting, prototyping, verification testing, release and sustainment of electromechanical embedded systems. The position also specifies and qualifies critical components from third parties, architects communication networks and control systems.
Circuit design activities include microcontrollers, analog circuitry, power distribution, interfaces, displays, batteries, and other components found in electric vehicular systems. PCB layout activities include CAD, stack-up, outline, placement, routing, fabrication packages, EMI/EMC, RFI, etc. The position works collaboratively with software, mechanical and control engineers, project managers, manufacturing, procurement, quality, test and other functions as part of an integrated team. The position also interfaces with customers, vendors, partners and internal stakeholders, requiring strong written and verbal communication skills.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Independent problem-solving skills. Ability to apply first principles to design problems.
- Perform circuit design, schematic entry, PCB layout, circuit simulations and detailed test plans
- Lead risk management activities to ensure delivery on-time in-full
- Conduct advanced design and analysis of analog, digital and power circuits including ADCs, microcontrollers, displays, sensors, power supplies, battery management and control systems
- System design including architecture, component specification and network communications
- Exercise system knowledge of embedded hardware and firmware
- Select and specify electronic components based on function, performance, cost, availability, reliability, etc.
- Provide written technical specifications and test plans in a clear unambiguous fashion
- Participate in Voice of Customer and Voice of Business activities
- Provide technical consultation to external partners, and mentorship for other engineers in the company
- Apply knowledge of DOE, FMEA, tolerance analysis, simulation, PVP&R, statistical methods, and DFM to improve design robustness and quality
Mandatory Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in a technical discipline from an accredited university
- Minimum 10 years of experience in electrical schematic design, circuit simulations, multi-layer PCB design and embedded system hardware design
- Willingness to travel up to 20% domestically, 1-2 weeks at a time (not consistent, but can happen from time to time)
THIS IS FULL TIME ON SITE POSITION. ON SITE FULL TIME IS REQUIRED. REMOTE DOES HAPPEN ON OCCASION, BUT NOT FREQUENTLY
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university
- Experience with vehicle networks including CAN, LIN, J1939, PLC, etc.
- Demonstrated technical leadership and mentorship
- Certified Lean Six Sigma (LSS) green or black belt with recent and meaningful projects
- Proven problem-solving skills using techniques such as 8D, PDCA, DMAIC and/or A3
- Proficiency with statistical methods for analyzing test results, capability, control, significance and product/process understanding
- Demonstrated success using LSS techniques such as DOE, DFSS, Kaizen, 5S, CTQs, DFMEA, and Taguchi methods
- Experience with the Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) processes and associated procedures, documents and artifacts
- Working knowledge of Scrum and Agile principles
- Design experience with Li-Ion battery management/charging and 3-phase electric motor drives
- Advanced user of Altium design tools
- Experience with SolidWorks Electrical or E3 Schematics
- Demonstrated knowledge designing robust systems to meet automotive applications, including wide temperature ranges, high vibration, severe EMI/ESD/RFI, noisy power & signals, complex regulatory requirements, and detailed homologation testing including SAE, FCC, UL, CARB, etc.
- Experience generating and reviewing intellectual property and patent submissions

Pay: $85,002.00 - $115,000.00 per year
