Track Laborer- Houston, Tx
Description
- Remove and replace rails, rail anchors, spikes, ballast, ties and other parts as needed
- Handle, help unload and move track materials and equipment from rail cars, carts or trucks and dig holes and trenches
- Maintain track beds by cutting vegetation and brush when needed, and sweeping, picking, and digging dust or snow from movable track parts
- Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures
- Drive company vehicles as the need arises
- Perform track maintenance, repair, and installation
- Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and customers and effectively resolve situations that arise
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to deliver information to coworker(s) and supervisor(s)
- Able to read and comprehend regulations and instructions as well as possess good verbal communication skills
- Experience working outdoors in variable weather conditions (consider professional, personal, and volunteer experience)
- Experience operating heavy equipment such as construction, farm, etc. (consider professional, personal, and volunteer experience)
- Experience working in a construction-type setting (consider professional, personal, and volunteer experience)
- Experience of 1 year or more in Railroad Maintenance of Way work
- Willing to work on-call, overtime, various shifts, 7 days a week, as well as weekends and holidays
Physical Requirements
- Able to remain standing for more than one-half of every work day with an opportunity to periodically change position for comfort
- Occasionally lift and carry up to 80 lbs, and push and pull objects up to 119 lbs
- Able to perform physically strenuous work on a continuous basis and occasionally bend, stoop and kneel. Must have manual dexterity with eye-hand coordination
- Occasionally climb ladders to access truck storage and have the ability to frequently walk and maintain balance on a variety of surfaces
Work Conditions
- Agree to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection where the company requires
- Work Conditions: Work takes place in many rural remote geographic areas. Able to work in rain, cold, and heat.
- Able to provide your own transportation
- Travel Requirements: Frequent travel is required. A few projects may require you to stay out of town from 1 - 10 days at a time.
- Willingness to practice safe work habits
- Must be willing and able to work around large equipment such as railcars, locomotives and cranes
- Authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship
