Job Title: Staff Electrical Engineer - Energy Storage and Power Distribution Systems
Location: Mountain View, CA (Onsite at Corporate Headquarters, occasional support at Fremont and Hollister facilities)
Job Description: We are seeking a talented Staff Electrical Engineer to join our team developing the energy storage and power distribution system for an electric eVTOL aircraft. In this role, you will be responsible for integrating, testing, and designing low voltage and high voltage power distribution aspects into the larger energy storage system and the aircraft as a whole.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including software, system, and mechanical engineers to ensure Power Management, Distribution, and Charging (PMDC) systems meet system requirements and certification criteria.
- Lead the design, development, and qualification testing of the aircraft’s low voltage and high voltage protection and distribution system.
- Define test milestones and create test plans to support integration of ESPS electronics into the aircraft (component > sub-system > system).
- Participate in the design, development, and testing of high voltage battery management systems.
- Optimize weight savings throughout the ESPS electrical power, protection, and distribution system.
- Specify and consolidate tech benches/rigs needed to support integration tests; identify necessary test resources and equipment.
- Design and build (with support from technicians) test harnesses and fixtures (e.g., breakout box) if needed.
- Triage issues from test benches/rigs and provide direct feedback to part owners.
- Coordinate hardware and software release updates for test benches/rigs.
- Implement basic software for embedded devices and systems.
Requirements:
- BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field with 8 years of experience (MS or PhD counts towards experience).
- Prior experience designing and testing high power electrical systems, including troubleshooting circuits, hardware, and software.
- Familiarity with aircraft protection schemes for both low and high voltage systems.
- Experience with microcontroller operation and understanding of analog and digital hardware development.
- Knowledge of DO-160 (or MIL-Std equivalent) processes for design, validation, and verification.
- Experience with industry standard communication protocols (RS-422/485, CAN, I2C, SPI).
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
Desired Skills:
- Experience with weight minimization techniques strongly desired.
- Familiarity with ECAD tools (Altium Designer or equivalent).
- Experience in mitigating and troubleshooting EMI/EMC issues.
- Ability to write and execute test procedures for design validation and verification.
- Familiarity with CPLD, FPGA operation, and Hardware-in-the-Loop concepts.
- Knowledge of DO-311, lithium-ion batteries, DC fast chargers, electric motors, and DC-DC converters.
- Proficiency in writing C/C++ code and Python scripts.
