Operating Room Nurse (Circulator)
Position Summary
The Operating Room nurse (circulator) is responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in the operating room and other areas of service for all patient populations at the ASC. This position provides care within the nursing standards of practice and policies of the ASC. The OR nurse is also responsible for making decisions regarding direct patient care needs and communicates information to the other team members as necessary.
Qualifications
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
- Current registered nurse licensure in the state of TN
- Two years minimum experience working in a sterile/operating room environment
- BLS required, ACLS required, PALS preferred
- Strong communication skills to instruct patients
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
- Determine appropriate course of action in more complex situations
- Can communicate effectively, both orally, and in writing
- Ability to handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others in a professional manner

- Uses sound judgement, interpersonal communication skills; evaluate the patient’s needs, ensuring a positive outcome
- Gather supplies and equipment for surgical cases; prepare surgery room for surgical procedures
- Monitor of surgery supply inventory; notify appropriate individual when supplies are needed; restock supplies in the operating room when necessary
- Ensure that the Operating Rooms are maintained in a clean, safe, and sanitary manner
- Ability to circulate surgical procedures/treatments for all surgeons at the ASC
- Individualize patient care according to patient’s health status, age, and surgery/procedure/treatment being performed
- Manage patient data and implement action plans appropriate to situations by using good judgement and critical thinking skills
- Complete documentation in a clear, concise manner according to policy; record all information accurately on the patient’s record
- Interact with team members regarding patient progress
- Assume accountability and responsibility for attendance and timely completion of competencies, mandatory programs, and participation in meetings
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times
- Represent the organization in a positive and professional manner at all times
- Responsible for knowing and following the standards established by Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996

Physical Demands
Work is performed in the ambulatory surgery center and requires the ability to operate patient care medical equipment, standard office equipment, and computers. Must be able to lift 50lbs, carry equipment, move, lift, and transfer patients, stand for extended periods, speak, and listen to others on the telephone, read, and write. Must be able to demonstrate gross and fine motor skills required to care for patients. Must be able to provide education to patients and families via public speaking.
