Animal Care Technician
About the Wayne County Humane Society:
The Wayne County Humane Society is an independent, non-profit animal shelter located in Wooster, Ohio. Our Mission is to find committed, permanent homes for companion animals in the community, measurably reduce companion animal overpopulation, and educate and promote humane values. We spay and neuter every animal that comes through our doors--more than 1,000 animals per year. As a non-profit, WCHS solely depends on the support of our donors, grants, and volunteers to help care for the many animals that come to us in need.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 1-2 years experience working with healthy, diseased and/or injured animals and 1 year experience handling, trapping and transporting animals or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Ability to interact with animals without hesitation including situations where an animal may be displaying signs of aggression or other abnormal behavior, and possess mannerisms that animals do not adversely react to.
- Experienced in using various animal capture techniques with the proper equipment.
- Ability to learn and operate shelter equipment.
- Knowledgeable of state laws regarding the care, treatment and sheltering of animals.
- Knowledgeable of county, city and township laws and ordinances regarding the care, treatment and sheltering of animals.
- Ability to pay attention to detail even in an environment of concurrent tasks.
- Perform duties unsupervised and make tactful decisions (Sunday and Monday shifts are minimally manned).
- Present a professional appearance at all times.
- Recognize and describe various breeds of dogs and cats plus characteristics and behaviors of that breed.
- Be able to identify common diseases in domestic animals.
Education:
- High School graduate or equivalent (i.e., GED), or prior experience satisfying necessary knowledge to perform the job duties.
Job Duties:
- Understand and adhere to all relevant WCHS policies and procedures.
- Recognize common forms of companion animal aggression; understand what human behavior can trigger an aggressive response and utilize precautionary measures to minimize the chances of any aggressive reaction.
- Read and comply with the Dog and Cat Kennel Cleaning procedures. Compliance is crucial as part of our mission is to provide a temporary place of safety for animals in our community.
- Clean and organize other areas of the shelter on a regular basis. · Perform animal intake, including intake form, initial examination and inoculations of animals brought to the shelter.
- Assist in the determination of adoptability of animals housed in the shelter per WCHS policies.
- Assist with euthanasia, as needed.
- Provide off-site event preparation and support.
- Assist customers with routine questions regarding adoptable pets at the shelter.
- Develop and maintain an effective working relationship with WCHS employees, volunteers, board members and the public.
- Maintain a clean work environment.
- Perform any other reasonable duties or tasks that the Animal Care Specialist or Shelter Director deems necessary to ensure effective daily shelter operations.
Communication Skills:
- Promote and maintain a positive public image for the WCHS.
- Must possess good oral and written (speaking and hearing) communication skills to include public speaking
Other Skills:
- Possess basic digital camera and photo processing skills.
- Operate a multi-button telephone console.
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to safely work in close proximity to a variety of animals on a daily basis.
- Push and pull up to 175 pounds.
- Able to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment to include pursuing a loose animal on foot.
- Pick up and carry 50 or more pounds on a regular basis.
Supervisor: Lead Animal Care Technician
Work Schedule:
Normal workday begins at 8:00 A.M.
Night check duty rotation (typically 12-15 weeks per year)
Schedule may change based on staff absences, shift rotations and special events.
