The YMCA READS! Program is an exciting literacy/mentoring initiative for kindergarten through fifth-grade students, taking place at Pinellas County Schools throughout St. Petersburg, FL. The program uses curriculum-based literacy instruction to help struggling readers in areas of phonetics, sight word recognition, spelling, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
As a tutor, you would provide assistance and support to the program coordinator during YMCA Reads! hours to ensure that outlined program goals and procedures are being achieved.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assists in student supervision, help maintain order, and positively reinforce "good choices" when appropriate.

Assists students to and from the restroom.

Assists coordinator in picking up and dropping off students around the school.

Oversees and ensures that mandatory procedures are being followed when parents or guardian are picking up students.

Maintains necessary paper work: testing, volunteer and student sign in and out logs.

Required to teach basic reading skills using lessons developed by the YREADS Coordinator using all curricula.

Attends required abuse risk management training.
- Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
Adheres to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be 16 years or older

Desire or interest in learning about literacy intervention
- Experience working with children in an educational environment

Compassion and empathy for struggling readers

Tutoring experience strongly preferred
After school hours, 4 days per week. Approximately 15 hours per week. $12-13/hour with excellent benefits including retirement savings and child care before/after school upon meeting eligibility requirements.
