Performs varying levels of manual work in year-round outdoor conditions. Work involves highway and general construction and repair; work road maintenance, snow and ice clearing and general maintenance. Sweeps and cleans building facilities and assists in vehicle maintenance.
The Laborers work with and under the supervision of upper classifications and are to maintain safe working conditions at all times.
Preference will be given to current Town of Greenwich employees who are members of Teamsters Local 456.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Graduation from high school or equivalent, plus 6 months of experience performing related heavy manual labor or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Work experience must have been obtained within the last 7 years.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS:
Obtain and maintain Commercial driver's license with DOT Medical Card, Class A or B, within 6 months of appointment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Working knowledge and general understanding of construction materials, practices and equipment.
Knowledge of and skill in grading shoulder areas, in the use of asphalt for road construction, of sidewalks, curbing and repair and installation and repair of drainage pipes.
Skilled in the operation of a dump truck or plow.
Skilled in operating a rodding machine for cleaning drain pipes and catch basins.
Skilled in the application of chemicals and the operation of apparatus for weed control.
Ability to perform tasks in a safe manner.
Ability to operate a variety of highway construction and/or landscape equipment and to operate pneumatic hammers, drills and compressor, to operate a string trimmer, mower, blower, etc.
Ability to identify and properly and safely use hand tools to perform assigned work.
Ability to read and understand English and to follow specific oral instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with supervisors, contractors, other employees and with the general public.
Ability to be available for overtime and overtime call-outs; especially during the winter.
Ability to perform the physically strenuous tasks in order to perform functions of the position including ability to walk and pick up litter for (3) consecutive miles, wheel a wheel barrow with a full load of up to 200 lbs. for a distance of 200 feet, lift up to 94 lbs. and carry a distance of up to 50 feet, dig holes/trenches by hand, typically 2' x 2' in depth, perform repetitive heavy lifting, bending, shoveling and other related strenuous tasks between 7 and 18 consecutive hours, out-of-doors, in all weather conditions, during daytime and/or nighttime operations, climb onto trucks for inspection of loads and installation of canvas cover and installing truck chains, automatic sander and snow plow.
Ability to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Connecticut.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs heavy manual work in construction and maintenance of roads, culverts, catch basins, bridges, curbs, sidewalks, parking areas and shoulders using a variety of hand tools, motorized and pneumatic equipment, i.e. compressor, pavement breaker and rock drills. Mixes cement and assists with masonry work.
Cuts grass, uses string trimmer, hedge trimmer, chainsaw, etc. Cuts and carries brush and wood. Grades and rakes topsoil, asphalt, concrete and other street repair materials. Prepares sub-grades and forms for sidewalks, curbs, roadways and shoulders.
Assists with snow and ice removal, operating snow blowers, as well as shoveling and salting of public walkways.
Cleans catch basins and sewers,; hauls and loads gravel, soil, etc., carries lumber and other materials; cleans grounds of debris.
Drives tractor or other equipment for roadside mowing, leaf removal and snow removal. Spray chemicals for weed control. Repairs mailboxes, posts, street signs, etc.
Sweeps streets clear of litter, glass, leaves; etc; picks-up street cans and loads trucks; shovels piles of debris into the truck; cuts weeds and grass. Picks up road kill and all manner of debris. Rakes large quantities of leaves and disposes of them into truck or leaf vacuum machines.
Performs as a flag person for traffic control, assists truck driver, arranges traffic signs, cones and barricades for safety and traffic control. Responsible for safe operation of vehicle, safety of helpers, passengers and public.
Maintains safe working conditions and performs tasks in a safe manner at all times.
Directs trucks in dumping or backing up; checks loads, cleans and clear ground for trucks. Maintains safe working conditions at all times.
Assists in putting on snow equipment; sanders, plows and tire chains, liquid deicer, sand, salt and other deicers.
Paints equipment including snowplows and sanders, repairs and installs truck canvas covers, repairs truck chains for snow and ice control.
Performs other related work as required.
