POSITION SUMMARY:
The Truancy Officer is responsible for working with local school districts to enforce the state attendance laws. This includes meeting with and monitoring students in a school setting to address violation of attendance policies. Issues warnings to youth/parents who violate attendance policies, filing formal complaints, educating and re-educating parents and students about applicable laws. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Generates school attendance reports to identify youth who are in violation of attendance policies.
- Conducts informal meetings and conferences with students of all ages (i.e. High, Middle and Elementary school students) who are habitually truant and their parents.
- Supervises youth with a goal of motivating positive behavioral change in order to eliminate additional delinquent behavior.
- Conducts mediations between the student, parent/guardian and teacher (or other school staff) if absences continue to habitual truancy.
- Prepares and files case reports for students investigated and/or apprehended for truancy. Prepares and submits monthly reports of all truancy referrals.
- Researches and obtains knowledge of applicable school district, community and state laws concerning school attendance.
- Determines and documents reasons for absences for habitually truant youth
- Files Habitual School Truancy and/or Educational Neglect complaints with the courts for students who attain 30 consecutive hours, 42 hours in one school month, or 72 hours in one school year. File Failure to send complaints on parents of students who are habitually truant.
- Performs Residential Investigations to verify that a student’s place of residence is within the school district as requested by officals of the local school district.
- Screens habitual school truancy cases for appropriateness for diversion and processes magistrate’s orders, warrants, summons and citations.
- Assists community agencies and schools with procedures and court related questions.
- Maintains database records to ensure accurate data collection and statistics.
- Performs duties as assigned
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
A Bachelor’s Degree in public administration, sociology, social work, criminology, political science, psychology, a closely related human service field OR equivalent experience. Two to four years of experience working with delinquent youth or multi-problem families. Strong computer skills. Familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the Juvenile Court System preferred but not required. Familiarity with HB 410 and Ohio truancy statutes preferred, but not required. Experience with Motivational Interviewing preferred, but not required.
