JOB SUMMARYThe Buyer, Chemicals & MRO Supply Chain, under the direction of the Supervisor, Chemicals & MRO Supply Chain, is responsible for placing orders, expediting back orders, and processing paperwork for chemicals, MRO, and non-stock supplies. The Buyer has a group of suppliers they manage from end-to-end.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Manage the end-to-end supply chain for a group of chemical suppliers.
- Processes requisitions for chemicals, MRO, and non-stock items, clarifies specifications, secures quotations, documents competitive bidding, and otherwise handles purchase orders, as required.
- Negotiates, secures, and follows-up on supplier commitments to ensure timely delivery of required materials.
- Monitors back-orders, expedites delivery of critical orders, and makes special arrangements for delivery and communicates the expected delivery date to the requisitioning department.
- Creates and submits Purchase Orders. Provides and maintains accurate status for each purchase order.
- Analyzes and places orders based upon MRP requirements. Confers with Master Scheduler, Supervisor, R&D, and other functional areas in determining needs and delivery schedules.
- Plans and maintains optimum part and/or chemical inventory levels to ensure on-time deliveries to meet internal and external customer requirements, while minimizing costs and premium transportation charges. Ensures highest levels of customer service for the finished goods manufactured with purchased raw materials.
- Researches and selects suppliers in specified circumstances, evaluates vendor performance, and utilizes different supplier sources to fill orders.
- Maintains an up-to-date filing system and database on Purchase Orders, pricing, and vendors to ensure immediate and accurate access to this information.
- Identifies alternate suppliers during periods of shortages or stock-outs.
- Resolve vendor invoice discrepancies as required.
- Collaborates with Blistex Quality Assurance team as needed to resolve vendor product quality issues and initiate product returns as needed.
- Assists Quality and Regulatory with requests for documentation and quality related issues.
- Obtains Certificates of Analysis, as required.
- Monitors supplier processes and production capacity and identify any potential issues to Supervisor, Chemicals & MRO Supply Chain
- Actively identifies and develops cost reduction and cost avoidance opportunities.
- Coordinates consolidated freight pickups with supplier and carrier.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs and assumes other duties and responsibilities, as may be required by the Supervisor, Chemicals & MRO Supply Chain.
- Perform vendor visits as required.
- Supports the Winner’s Circle and Blistex Quality Systems while operating in a cGMP environment.
- Adheres to established Blistex purchasing practices and policies to ensure honest, fair, ethical, and profitable relationships with vendors. Keeps informed on legal matters that affect purchasing policies.
- Builds quality relationships with vendors and monitors their performance.
- Explores new materials, suppliers, and processes to achieve the best possible value, quality, and service.
- Optimizes inventory levels of chemicals to minimize obsolescence and avoid stock-outs.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
- A minimum of a 4-year college degree in operations or supply chain management, or related discipline; or equivalent in training and experience is required.
- The knowledge and skills required for this position are typically acquired in 2-3 years of experience in a purchasing capacity within a chemical commodity-based environment.
- The position requires knowledge of methods and techniques used in supply chain, inventory control, purchasing, and warehouse/shipping functions, as well as MRP type systems.
- Prior Purchasing experience in an FDA regulated consumer products industry is a plus.
- Strong ability to analyze problems and select proper corrective action within specified practices.
- Must be computer literate in a Windows environment (Word, Excel, Access, etc.).
- Good math aptitude.
- Effective interpersonal skills are required to interact with various levels of internal and external customers.
- Good written and oral communication skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & ENVIRONMENT
- This position requires the individual to Stand or Walk up to 33% of the time. This position requires the individual to Sit, Talk or Hear, and use hands to Finger, Handle or Feel 66 to 100% of the time. This position requires the individual to reach with hands and arms 33 to 66% of the time.
- This position will require the individual to lift up to 10 pounds 33 to 66% of the time.
- The vision requirements for this position includes close vision of 20 inches or less; distance vision of 20 feet or more, color vision (ability to distinguish between colors), peripheral vision (ability to see up, down, left, right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth perception (3 dimensional vision), and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
- This position has no exposure to measurable environmental hazards or conditions.
- The noise level for this position will Be Moderate Noise (Ex: Business office equipment, computer printers, production machinery, light traffic).
- Overtime requirements are dependent upon departmental demands, inclusive of weekend hours.
