MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST II
Sewer Division of Public Works
The probationary rate is $16.328 per hour. Probation is six (6) months, after that the rate would increase to $17.145. In addition to the hourly rate, the City provides health insurance, life insurance, short term disability, and a pension. The pension requires 4% contribution from the employee and the City currently contributes over 20%. Vesting is after six (6) years of employment.
GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:
Performs difficult skilled work on a variety of construction, maintenance and repair projects. Operates specialized equipment in connection with task. Does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual activity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm’s length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. The ability to smell is required in order to sense hazardous gasses in the air. The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performing a variety of semiskilled and skilled manual labor tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, water distribution, sewer lines, and stormwater systems.
- Repairs, changes, and installs new water meters and maintains related records.
- Repairs and test backflow prevention devices. Replaces devices as needed. Prepares necessary work orders and record keeping logs on backflow devices as needed.
- Operates track hoe, backhoe, dozer, forklift, tractors, wheel loader, grader, street sweeper, VAC truck, and other heavy equipment in the installation, maintenance, and repair on projects on streets, water lines, sewer lines, parks, driveways, and related facilities.
- Performs preventative maintenance on fire hydrants and valves.
- Assist with the setting up and breaking down for special events.
- Performs all tasks and duties of Maintenance Specialist I and III when required.
- Keeps assigned crew truck clean and stocked as directed by division supervision.
- Performs other related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
- Comprehensive skills and knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventative maintenance of the equipment to which assigned.
- General knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.
- Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time, often in unfavorable weather conditions.
- Ability to lift heavy articles
- Ability to read and write
- Ability to use work order software
- Good physical condition
- Ability to wear proper PPE for given conditions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- 2-4 years’ experience in the performance of heavy manual work including extensive experience in the operation of heavy equipment and motorized vehicles preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess a valid Florida drivers license.
- Prefer the possession of a class B CDL license valid in the State of Florida.
