Supervising Registered Nurse (NEW SALARY)
The 22nd Judicial Circuit-Juvenile Division seeks applicants for a Supervising Registered Nurse. Candidates must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program and a registered nurse in the State of Missouri. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred. SUMMARY:
Under general direction of the Superintendent, provides professional nursing care to juveniles and supervision of the medical unit as well as staff training and protocol development on health and wellness. Follows established nursing techniques and practices. Implements the orders of the physician(s) providing health care related services to youth. Observes and reports on the medical needs of juveniles. Requires performing duties in a secure institutional setting subject to constant video surveillance for purposes of security and welfare of detained youth.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position has significant supervisory responsibilities as delineated below.
JOB DUTIES:
- Responsible for all duties related to the direct supervision of medical unit personnel.
- Supervises staff assigned to the medical unit, including managing the schedule for staff in the unit.
- Ensures medical unit personnel are current on their licensure(s).
- Performs duties associated with the medical admission and release of juveniles to and from detention.
- Communicates with parents/guardians and Court personnel regarding the health care needs of detained youth, including providing medical records in compliance with a subpoena or court order.
- Works collaboratively with Psychological Services Unit personnel regarding the health care needs of detained youth.
- Coordinates physician and psychiatrist or other clinical appointments for detained juveniles and provides necessary follow up and communication with court personnel regarding care plans
- Maintains accurate documentation and records of care, medications, and patient conditions that meet the physician’s needs, patient privacy, and current record keeping standards.
- Prepares and administers oral, sub-cutaneous, and intramuscular medications and treatments as prescribed by physician(s).
- Assists physician(s) during examinations and treatment of juveniles.
- Makes arrangements for blood tests, urinalysis and other lab work as directed.
- Orders and maintains needed medical supply inventory in an organized and accountable fashion.
- Prepares annual budget for medical unit and maintains invoicing and related paperwork associated with finances.
- Responds to immediate needs of the youth in the building and performs emergency medical care including Response Team calls, crisis intervention, first aid, and juvenile’s medical requests.
- Observes, measures and reports vital signs and symptoms of juveniles, such as pain level, temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, respiration, etc.
- Consults with food service provider to plan, coordinate, and supervise special dietary needs of juveniles and those prescribed by the physician.
- Consults regularly with Superintendent, Head Housekeeper and other Court personnel on the sanitary needs and conditions of the entire juvenile division.
- Ensures a medical report is provided daily at the watch change conference.
- Performs quarterly conferences and writes performance evaluations for all staff assigned to the medical unit. Counsels staff regarding problem areas, i.e. attendance, work performance, etc.
- Trains division staff in CPR, First Aid, universal precautions, AED operation, and other health related matters as directed in order to maintain staff certifications, and provides staff with the corresponding paperwork regarding their certification.
- Maintains yearly TB testing for staff at the juvenile facility.
- Performs routine testing for staff and juveniles relating to viruses and or outbreaks at the juvenile facility, and ensures current health protocols are implemented accordingly.
- Works shift work on days and evenings including holidays and weekends, including for special projects and substitute coverage for staff call-ins, etc.
- Regular and prompt attendance is considered an essential function of this position.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
***Thorough knowledge of nursing theories and practices, understanding of basic biological, physical and medical sciences as relates to nursing care. Thorough knowledge of supervisory practices. Substantial ability to work in collaboration with others in order to maintain a multidisciplinary team of providers approach to the health care needs of detained youth. Substantial ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing. Ability to give clear instructions in elementary nursing duties.
***Thorough knowledge of institutional nursing practices. Able to train staff in CPR and First Aid and other health and wellness topics. Ability to have flexible working hours for staff coverage purposes.
