Here at Southeastern Guide Dogs, we are in the business of giving FREEDOM to the visually impaired and veteran communities – and it all starts in the Puppy Nursery with nurturing, kind and patient technicians caring for our mommas and their precious puppies (AKA “future superheroes”). Our Puppy Nursery Technicians take on varied duties that may include feeding, bathing, medicating, and maintaining a clean kennel environment to meet strict biosecurity protocols and providing enrichment and socialization to ensure optimal psychological health of the dogs in our care. This role also provides specialized care for newborn puppies, whelping mothers, and other special vet cases, and handles data entry and duties related to arrival or release of dogs.
These technicians work with whelping and weening mothers as well as newborn and young puppies (0 – 10 weeks).
Here are some things you’ll learn:
- Observe and assist with whelping/c-sections and neonatal care, blood draws, cytology
- The science behind canine breeding
- Puppy education training with Education Specialist
- Dog and puppy body language
The qualifications you’ll need:
- A clear understanding of the general care and wellbeing of expecting broods, neonates and breeders in kennel preferred
- Ability to properly interpret treatment plans and prescriptions and administer medications
- Understanding of kennel procedures and strict disease control
- Physical stamina to be on your feet bending, lifting, scooping, and hosing
- Ability to work weekends, evenings, overnights and holidays
Other Important Details:
- Technicians are exposed to animal body fluids, medications, medical procedures and medical equipment.
- They are often required to interact with our guests and volunteers
- This position pays $15/hour
