Receiving no governmental funding, we rely upon community support to achieve our goals of improving and protecting the lives of animals in our community and alleviating their suffering and abuse.
Primary Purpose:
This position is responsible for managing the accounting and finance function of the Houston SPCA, while serving as a manager reporting to the Chief Financial & Administrative Officer. The Accounting Director will manage and execute the policies and procedures related to all accounting functions, including, but not limited to, general ledger accounting, financial software management, monthly financial closes, payroll, internal controls, Board & Internal reporting, 403b reporting, financial analysis, budgeting, and external audits.
Essential Functions of the Position:
- Oversee the organization's financial operations and accounting practices based on generally accepted accounting principles; ensure transparent financial information and ethical behavior standards; advise staff on organization's financial policies and procedures.
- Oversee Accounts Payable and general accounting functions.
- Responsible for processing Payroll biweekly and coordinating with Human Resources for accuracy.
- Ensure the recording of all cash receipts. Coordinate various reconciliations of contributions with Development Department.
- Responsible for the reconciliation and maintenance of bank accounts and all other general ledger accounts.
- Ensure a timely and accurate month end close, within ten days after each month end.
- Responsible for the maintenance of the fixed asset register and general ledger.
- Serve as a steward of the organization's resources, working to ensure all resources are utilized properly, legally, and ethically.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory and business practices related to financial management.
- Serve as contact with independent audit firm for annual audit, and prepare documents required for the IRS Form 990 returns and Form 5500 return.
- Prepare financial statements for Board and other reporting needs.
- Manage the organization's cash flow and forecasting and oversee the financial portion of Capital projects.
- Responsible for managing accounting staff.
- Protect all confidential information, including employees, donors, clients, animals, and internal communications.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
