IBSS is seeking up one (1) Expedition Photographer/ Marine Operations and Multimedia Specialist (seasonal sea-
going) to support the Papaha naumokua kea Marine Debris Project (PMDP) (www.pmdphawaii.org) in its mission to
protect the remote islands and atolls of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands within the Papaha naumokua kea
Marine National Monument (PMNM) for up to 90 total sea days per year.
The Expedition Photographer/ Marine Operations and Multimedia Specialist serves as the lead expedition
photographer/videographer, captures, reviews, and edits digital content (photo and video) for PMDP utilizing UAS,
action cameras, underwater housings, and digital mirrorless camera systems, organizes and archives digital
content, develops and/or directs content for dissemination, develops press release media packages for media, and
maintains photographic equipment. The Expedition Photographer/ Marine Operations and Multimedia Specialist
will also support PMDP in other programmatic needs, including but not limited to: field equipment preparation
(small boats, outboard motors, safety equipment, survey equipment), field work training (small boat and dive
safety training), field work execution (up to three separate 30-day missions living aboard a chartered vessel ship)
conducting small boat and free-dive operations to survey and remove derelict fishing nets from shallow coral reefs
and shorelines, and field work mobilization and demobilization as necessary.
Key Responsibilities:
- Participate in up to three 30-day marine debris removal field missions (up to 90 total days at sea) on
remote islands or aboard a large vessel (~185-ft in length) within the Papaha naumokua kea Marine
National Monument (PMNM).
- Capture and edit digital content (photo and video) for PMDP during at-sea field expeditions within the
PMNM and during training period leading up to the expedition.
- Lead Unmanned Aerial Survey (UAS)/drone surveys and media content capture.
- Direct and develop multimedia content for dissemination (short summary video clips, graphics, etc.).
- Organize, distribute, and archive digital content.
- Review and approve digital content before public dissemination.
- Provide the Social Media Content Manager digital content for social media.
- Develop press release media package for local, national, and international distribution.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Participate in up to three 30-day marine debris removal field missions (up to 90 total days at sea) on
remote islands or aboard a large vessel (~185-ft in length) within the Papaha naumokua kea Marine
National Monument (PMNM).
- Serve as a small boat operator within a team of up to four staff, at remote islands and atolls within the
PMNM.
- Serve as a freediver/snorkeler and conduct marine debris survey and removals of derelict fishing gear and
other debris from shallow coral reefs (0-30 ft depths) and shoreline environments.
- Conduct shoreline cleanups of marine debris.
- Collect data identifying different types of marine debris and benthic habitats using various survey
techniques and procedures.
- Assist with preparation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of field equipment, including inflatable small
boats, outboard motors, dive equipment, small boat equipment, safety equipment, and survey
equipment.
- Conduct field equipment inventory, inspection, maintenance, repair, and purchasing.
- Collect, QA/QC, and processes marine debris and other data, assisting with preparing summary reports for
publication and presentation.
- Participate in mission loading (mobilization) and offloading (demobilization), including the transport and
disposal of marine debris.
- Conduct forklift operations and participate in management of PMDP equipment within the warehouse.
- Conduct outreach and education efforts including tabling public events and school visits.
- Assist with data management, including summary and metric reporting at the end of each field mission.
- Support administrative and bookkeeping duties when necessary, including purchase of field equipment
and supplies, processing receipts, classifying transactions, reconciling books, training costs, logistics, and
other.
- Conduct animal handling and wildlife disentanglements.
- Conduct permitted activities associated with NOAA's Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program including
surveying, tagging, handling, disentanglements, data collection, and other duties as required.
- Advises team on local flora and fauna, biosecurity and ecological integrity, wildlife life cycles and
behaviors, and permit compliance.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien.
- Minimum of one (1) year of post-high school work experience or schooling.
- Must meet Medical Doctor's health criteria for in-water (post employment dive physical examination)
and at-sea duty on large vessels, which includes meeting the physical, watermanship, and experience
requirements.
- Must possess SCUBA certification of at minimum Basic Open-Water through an accredited dive
institution (i.e. PADI, NAUI).
