About READ 718
READ 718 is a Brooklyn community-based organization providing individualized, evidence-based, one-to-one literacy instruction to children from low-income households in grades 3-8 who have fallen behind in reading. We are committed to closing the literacy gap in Brooklyn and helping to ensure educational access and equity for all Brooklyn children. Our immediate goal is for our participants to leave our program reading at or above grade level; our ultimate goal is to make a substantial impact on our students’ lifelong education and life outcomes by strengthening their fundamental reading skills.
We operate in two centers in Brooklyn (Boerum Hill and Bed-Stuy) as well as remotely.
The Civic Corps Role
READ 718 is accepting applications for an open @AmeriCorps position as a Volunteer Outreach Coordinator. During this year of service, the Volunteer Outreach Coordinator will engage with our community through volunteer recruitment and onboarding to ensure we have the best possible volunteer tutors for our READers. The ultimate goals of this position are 1) to increase our volunteer pool by 30%, particularly in the remote space, 2) Help ensure a diverse pool of volunteers in terms of identity and experience, with a particular emphasis on recruiting BIPOC volunteers 3) Enhance and develop sustainable systems for ongoing volunteer outreach.
Duties and Responsibilities
Projects for this NYC Civic Corps member will include:
- Familiarizing self with READ 718’s current volunteer outreach practices, systems, and plans
- Developing a clear, sustainable, and ongoing volunteer recruitment strategy and plan
- Establishing volunteer partnerships & researching new avenues to engage potential volunteers
- Creating and implementing social media outreach strategy for increasing volunteer engagement
- Leading volunteer information sessions and open houses; supporting program staff with volunteer onboarding
- Learning systems for entering and tracking volunteer applications and data in Salesforce
- Identifying and researching topics of interest for potential volunteer workshops
- Attending and representing READ 718 at volunteer outreach events (occasionally on weekends) around Brooklyn and greater NYC
- Planning and leading volunteer appreciation event(s)
- Collecting surveys and other volunteer feedback on their experience at the end of each 10-week cycle (Dec, March, June)
- Analyzing and reporting on the survey data to staff and board
- Creating a one-pager about READ 718 volunteers including survey info, demographics, recruitment information, retention, testimonials
- Creating a transition document that details all aspects of the project, including outstanding assignments, main points of contact, and potential next steps to move the project forward
Qualifications
- Outstanding organizational and communication/interpersonal skills
- Self-starter with a positive attitude and passion for READ 718’s mission
- Adaptable and flexible with an affinity for problem-solving
- Experience working with/managing volunteers a plus
- Experience with Google Drive, Salesforce, Canva, and social media posting
Schedule
September 2024 - June 2025
Monday-Friday, 10am-6pm; occasional evenings and weekends for workshops or events
