Reader’s Advisor
The City of Woonsocket is looking for a Reader’s Advisor for Harris Public Library. Under the direction of the Library Director, the Reader’s Advisor conducts programs designed to reach individuals and groups about library programs and services. The person in this position assists patrons in the selection of library materials and reference resources, catalogues and classifies reading material, maintains library booklist and participates in storytelling and other learning programs throughout the year. The successful candidate must have a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent with some library science course work. Two (2) to three (3) years of prior library experience. The successful candidate must be willing to communicate written and verbally with all groups of people; he/she must schedule and coordinate library activities, as well as work well with other members of the Harris Public Library staff.

JOB TITLE: Reader’s Advisor
DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: Legislative Department/Board of Library Trustees Division
PAY GRADE/HOURS: Grade M32A / 35-hour work week
UNION: Local 670, RI Council 94, AFSCME, AFL-CIO
POSITION SUMMARY: Under professional supervision, the Readers Advisor performs duties which require proficiency and knowledge in a special area or subject field. Assists in supportive tasks and responsibilities as learning progresses and latent skills develop. May supervise nonprofessional staff where required, and does related work as required.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Conducts program of outreach services to individuals and groups outside the library building.
· Maintains program to keep the community informed of library programs and services.
· Assists patrons in selection of materials and reference information.
· Performs simple cataloging and classification.
· Assists in maintenance of library equipment.
· Participates in storytelling and audio visual programs.
· Complies variety of booklists.
· Performs routine procedures for technical services and loan of materials.
· Performs other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) or equivalent combination of training and experience indicating ability to perform required duties. Must be able to take library science courses relevant to the position. Training or experience in one (1) or more of the following courses: typing, art (illustration) or outreach programming is required. Must participate effectively in the area of library responsibility: coordinate departmental activities with total library programs. Must maintain effectively working relationships with staff and clientele.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PERSONAL QUALITIES: Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in oral or written expression. Ability to meet people easily and evaluate situations. Must participate effectively in the area of library responsibility: coordinate departmental activities with total library program. Must maintain effective working relationships with staff and clientele. Show desire to be associated with the library profession. Adaptability, good health, tact, stamina, courtesy, initiative and good judgment.
