Job Title: Clinical Laboratory Specialist
The Clinical Laboratory Specialist performs complex diagnostic laboratory tests and procedures to support patient care and treatment. This role requires advanced technical skills, comprehensive knowledge of laboratory techniques, and a strong commitment to maintaining high-quality standards. The Clinical Laboratory Specialist works collaboratively with medical staff to ensure accurate and timely test results for patient diagnosis and treatment.
- Diagnostic Testing:
- Perform and oversee a variety of complex laboratory tests in hematology, chemistry, microbiology, immunology, and blood banking.
- Analyze test results and provide interpretive data to assist in patient diagnosis and management.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain sophisticated laboratory equipment and instruments.
- Quality Assurance:
- Implement and monitor quality control procedures to ensure test accuracy and reliability.
- Identify and troubleshoot issues with laboratory processes or equipment.
- Participate in proficiency testing and quality improvement initiatives.
- Specimen Collection and Processing:
- Oversee the collection, processing, and handling of specimens, ensuring adherence to proper procedures.
- Ensure the integrity, labeling, and storage of specimens for accurate test results.
- Data Management:
- Document test results and maintain accurate records in electronic health records (EHR) and laboratory information systems (LIS).
- Review and verify test results, ensuring accuracy before reporting to healthcare providers.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Follow laboratory safety protocols and maintain a safe working environment.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and guidelines, including CAP, CLIA, and OSHA.
- Properly manage and dispose of biohazardous materials and waste.
- Training and Supervision:
- Provide training and mentorship to new laboratory staff and students.
- Supervise laboratory personnel, ensuring adherence to protocols and high performance standards.
- Communication:
- Communicate test results, methodologies, and issues to physicians, supervisors, and other healthcare professionals.
- Serve as a resource for technical questions and provide expert advice on laboratory practices.
- Professional Development:
- Stay current with advancements in laboratory science through continuing education and professional development.
- Participate in laboratory meetings and contribute to professional development activities.
- Experience: Minimum of 3+ years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting preferred.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
- Certifications:
- Clinical Laboratory Specialist (CLS) certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
