UMIT Home Health is a Tribal owned home health agency offering both skilled nursing/therapy services and personal care aide services. We provide high quality, convenient, and reliable in-home healthcare to patients. We service the following areas: Caroline Co., Charles City Co., Chesterfield Co., Colonial Heights City, Dinwiddie Co., Essex Co., Gloucester Co., Hanover Co., Henrico Co., Hopewell City, James City Co., Lancaster County, King and Queen Co., King William Co., Middlesex Co., New Kent Co., Petersburg City, Prince George Co., Richmond Co., & Richmond City.
Position
The Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant will provide skilled occupational therapy services on an intermittent basis to patients in their homes. COTA operates under the supervision of an occupational therapist. COTA will follow the OT’s treatment program/goals for improving patient function and safety to maximize patient independence. Positions available for areas both north and south of James River.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide patient care services under supervision of Occupational Therapist (OT) in patient homes.
- Complete clinical progress notes within 24 hours.
- Instruct/train patient and caregivers in home exercise programs.
- Instruct/train patient in therapeutic ADLs/IADLs & creative activities that improve independence and physical/mental functioning.
- Educate/train patient in use of ADL devices and durable medical equipment.
- Identify possible ineffective drug therapy, adverse reactions, significant side effects, drug allergies, and contraindicated medications. Reports such immediately to the supervising OT.
- Observe, record, and report to OT & physician the patient's reaction to treatment & changes in patient condition.
- Attend & contribute to interdisciplinary case conferences.
- Confirm patients’ scheduled visits evening before visit.
- Actively maintain continuing education requirements.
- Assume other duties as deemed appropriate, compliant, & necessary by the OT.
- Maintain productivity expectations.
Knowledge, Skills and Ability Qualifications:
- Successfully graduated from an Occupational Therapist Assistant program accredited by The Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc. (AOTA), or its successor organizations.
- Certification examination passed for Occupational Therapist Assistants developed and administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, Inc. (NBCOT).
- Current licensure in good standing as a COTA in the Commonwealth of Virginia or eligible compact state licensure.
- 2 years of home health experience (preferred).
- Valid Virginia driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and reliable transportation with insurance.
- Strong computer and documentation skills.
- Demonstrates autonomy, organization, assertiveness, flexibility, and cooperation in performing job responsibilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Other Requirements:

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Required to bend, stoop, reach, and move patient weight up to 250 pounds; lift and/or carry up to 30 pounds; safely navigate steps & all terrains in all types of weather to access patient homes that may not be ADA compliant; ability to drive to patients’ homes; hearing, eyesight, and physical dexterity sufficient to perform a physical assessment and perform patient care. Must be able to effectively communicate in English.
