POSITION SUMMARY
Conduct chemical, physical, and instrumental laboratory tests of solids, liquids, and gaseous materials for research and development of new products or processes, quality control, maintenance of environmental standards, and other work involving experimental, theoretical, or practical application of chemistry and related sciences.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Monitor raw material and finished product quality to ensure compliance with standards and specifications.
- Set up and conduct chemical and microbiological experiments, tests, and analyses using chromatography, spectroscopy, physical and chemical separation techniques, microscopy, and microbiological plating techniques.
- Conduct chemical and physical laboratory tests to assist scientists in making qualitative and quantitative analyses of solids, liquids, and gaseous materials.
- Write technical reports or prepare graphs and charts to document experimental results.
- Compile, document, review, and interpret test and analysis results to provide accurate, precise, and timely reporting of conditions and results.
- Edit, write, and implement new and revised QC SOP’s and analysis methods.
- Prepare chemical solutions for analyzing raw materials and finished products following established methods or develop and verify methods as needed.
- Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of the instruments.
- Maintain, clean, and sterilize laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Order and inventory materials to maintain supplies.
- Responsible for sampling and analyzing nutritional supplement raw materials and finished products using instruments and techniques such as HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography), UPLC-MS (Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry), HPTLC (High-Performance Thin Layer Chromatography), UV-Vis (Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy), GC-MS (Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry), AA (Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy), NIR (Near Infrared Spectroscopy), Mid-IR (Mid Infrared Spectroscopy), ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Mass Spectrometry), wet chemistry, and microbiological procedures and the other equipment involved in sample preparation and analysis.
- Conduct sampling and analysis programs to maintain quality standards for raw materials, in-process materials, and finished products.
- Maintain familiarity and conformity and comply with laboratory and company SOPs, cGMP compliance strategies, and safety policies.
- Assess the identity, safety, potency, and quality of raw materials and finished products.
- Supervise, perform, and finalize OOS and OOT investigations.
- Review new raw materials with Quality Assurance, Formulations, and Purchasing.
- Set specifications for new and existing raw materials and finished products in conjunction with Quality Assurance.
- Aid in the general flow of lab procedures.
- Perform duties safely and report or correct unsafe conditions or actions.
- Perform and assist in other duties, responsibilities, or projects as needed and directed.
KNOWLEDGE
Technical/Clerical and Administrative
- Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their practical applications to QC laboratory functions.
- Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, and disposal methods. Knowledge of the theoretical and practical aspects of Analytical Chemistry including chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques for the isolation, identification, and quantitation of natural and artificial chemical compounds in their pure form and as part of a complex matrix.
- Knowledge of instruments and equipment including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
Food Production and Processing
Knowledge of raw materials, quality control, laws, standards, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of quality and compliant goods.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience
Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Chemistry is preferred. Applicable work experience is acceptable as a substitute for education. Experience in the sampling and analysis of dietary supplement raw materials and finished products or similar laboratory experience desired.
