The Bronx Charter School for Children (TBCSC) is seeking exceptional Special Education elementary and Middle School teachers who are passionate about making a significant impact in the classroom at an established independent charter school in the South Bronx’s Mott Haven neighborhood. TBCSC offers staff the unique opportunity to work in a school that provides substantial resources and support so that teachers may excel, grow and thrive.
Our Special Education teachers work closely with General Education teachers, and our Special Education Coordinator within an Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) model to plan targeted interventions for students. Special Education teachers consistently diagnose students in order to provide individual education plans that include differentiation of strategies.
Qualifications
Candidates should be able to demonstrate most, if not all, of the following:
Major Performance Expectations
- Utilize scholars’ IEPs to inform instructional assessments that provide meaningful measurements of scholars’ growth towards goals;
- Implement instructional practices for scholars with disabilities and culturally and linguistically diverse scholars, including specially designed instruction, Universal Design for Learning, culturally responsive-sustaining teaching, intervention techniques, modified curriculum, IEP writing, and compliance;
- Develop and teach highly engaging, standards-based, academically rigorous curriculum and lessons;
- Write and update monthly progress reports;
- Collaborate and communicate regularly with the Special Education Coordinator;
- Ensure compliance with all pertinent special education laws and policies;
- Inspire students to hold themselves to high standards of academics and character;
- Establish and uphold classroom routines to ensure a focused, safe and caring environment
- Analyze assessment data and use it to inform and differentiate your instruction;
- Collaborate with colleagues to share best practices and ensure student mastery of standards;
- Maintain close relationships with families, including phone calls and conferences; and
- Develop and lead an advisory group of 12-15 scholars that is focused on social/emotional well-being
Experience/Personal Qualities
- A minimum of 3 years teaching in a similar environment;
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, Master’s degree preferred;
- NYS Students with Disabilities Certification;
- Demonstrated success at raising achievement levels of typically underserved students;
- Passion for teaching and learning;
- The ability to connect with and motivate a diverse group of students;
- Commitment to hard work; and,
- Boundless energy and enthusiasm for working with BCSC students and other adults in the building.
