Associate Manager
School on Wheels is a nonprofit organization founded in 1993. Our mission is to enhance the educational opportunities for children K-12 without a home. With the help of hundreds of volunteers, our goal has been to shrink educational gaps and provide students with the highest quality education possible.
Since 1993, we have:
- Provided mentoring and tutoring for more than 50,000 unhoused students in six counties in Southern California.
- Partnered with 400+ sites, including shelters, school districts, and after-school programs.
- Supplying approximately 5,000 students with school supplies yearly.
Position Overview:
The Associate Manager manages a team of coordinators who directly manage our programs in Los Angeles County, Long Beach, and the San Gabriel Valley. The Associate Manager will support their team in reaching their goals through coaching, training, and by being in the community with them. The Associate Manager will play a critical role in establishing deadlines, goals, and objectives and holding their direct reports accountable to ensure our programs run efficiently across the region they are assigned to.
Major Responsibilities:
- Work with team members in planning and implementing staff goals and objectives, establishing priorities, monitoring their progress and ensuring team effectiveness and success in achieving them.
- Support, motivate and hold accountable assigned staff to increase the number of students tutored, including conducting student outreach in all areas – especially to non-traditional locations such as motels and schools with the highest homeless populations.
- Support, motivate, and hold assigned staff accountable to increase the number of volunteers in our program. Work collaboratively to enhance our volunteer recruitment and retention strategies.
- Make presentations with coordinators to appropriate personnel at shelters, motels, group foster homes and other homeless organizations/agencies to educate them regarding SOW and its work.
- Evaluate and document team members performance and provide support, assistance, and training when needed.
- Provide ongoing feedback to team members and conduct weekly one-on-one meetings, monthly performance reviews, and updates using our goal tracker.
- Encourage team members to enhance their skills and competencies by using their Development Dollars.
- Communicate and ensure that team members are following SOW policies and procedures.
- Participate in recruiting and hiring team members; temporarily work as a coordinator in regions with an open position.
- Develop and maintain a team atmosphere that supports and encourages each person to make suggestions for innovative changes.
- Ensure staff members have the necessary tools and resources to succeed.
- Encourage the effective use of technology to improve operations, ensuring team members are well trained in these areas and in the management of Salesforce.
Required Qualifications:
- Supervisory experience, a minimum of two years.
- Use of personal vehicle required.
- Exhibit cultural sensitivity and empathy for students experiencing homelessness
- Proven ability to establish deadlines, goals, and objectives for direct reports.
- Experience and interest in data management, with a focus on maintaining organized and accurate records to inform decision making.
- Exhibit strong communication skills, both orally and in writing, with the capacity to deliver effective presentations.
- Demonstrate excellent technology skills, including competence with Google Workspace.
- Ability to represent SOW in the highest manner; exemplify SOW values and ethics.
- Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with volunteer recruitment, retention and management.
- Experience working with at-risk children.
- Experience using Salesforce.
Job Type & Working Conditions:
- This is a full time, hybrid position .
- While your primary office location will be your home, you will be required to drive throughout the geographical area assigned to you (Los Angeles county, Long Beach, and the San Gabriel Valley) in order to attend meetings, events, and support your direct reports.
- Some early evenings and some Saturday work will be periodically required.
- Lifting of donations, including backpacks and school supplies will be periodically required

Pay: $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
