Gelest, Inc, part of the Mitsubishi Chemical Group, is currently seeking a qualified candidate to join our small-scale R&D Process Development team as a Polymer Development Chemist.
Qualified candidates will be expected to synthesize existing catalog compounds and custom compounds using literature or supervisor-derived processes. Candidates should have the ability to write detailed reports and other communications, providing input for the development of technical literature. The Polymer Development Chemist will support the production staff in scale-up of existing processes and syntheses.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Follows literature or prescribed processes for the synthesis and purification of silicones in a safe manner.

Writes detailed descriptions including comments for potential improvements of the work done.

Performs preliminary and in-process analytical work on reactions.

Develops new processes and new products for customer evaluation and for possible inclusion in catalogs.

Master's degree in Chemistry or closely related field with a minimum 3 years of experience of working in a synthetic chemistry lab. PhD in relevant Chemistry focus preferred

Experience in polymer or macromolecular Chemistry strongly preferred.

Ability to read, understand and apply technical literature.

Lifting/Carrying - Frequent lifting of up to and over 50 lbs.

Pushing/Pulling/Climbing – Must be able to push a drum truck, use equipment to tip over drums and climb stairs.

Able to operate or learn to operate a forklift

Walking/Continuous standing

Be aware of fire, safety and chemical hazards. Wear personal protective equipment as needed.

Pass respirator fit test as required by OSHA

Must be able to hear and respond to all communications and alarms

Must be able to read instructions, SDS and interpret packaging codes

Responsible for operating various hand tools and pumps in a safe manner
