We are currently looking for a Lead Carpenter to join our team. The ideal candidate should possess strong carpentry skills and experience, and be able to oversee and execute various carpentry projects while ensuring top-quality workmanship and timely completion. This is a hands-on role that requires excellent leadership skills and a vast knowledge of carpentry tasks.
Responsibilities:
- Complete projects assigned by the Fabrication Manager and the Shop Foreman accurately and on time.
- Use build drawings created by the Scenic Technical Designers to measure, cut, shape, assemble, and join materials and communicate any issues or concerns.
- Fabricate or modify scenic elements as necessary for scenic events.
- Report any problems with deadlines, materials, or conflicts within team personnel to the Fabrication Manager and the Project Manager.
- Communicate and delegate tasks to carpenters, without direct supervision, to ensure efficient workflow.
- Alert the Fabrication Manager when projects are ready for QC by the Project Manager.
- Ensure scenic pieces are wrapped and moved onto the dock for loading.
- Maintain shop safety by overseeing the maintenance of machinery, equipment, and tools.
- Alert the Fabrication Manager and the Shop Foreman when running low on stock and inventory of hardware, tools, and cleaning supplies.
- Maintain the physical quality and safe operation of all scenic elements for each production.
- Ensure that all carpenters are knowledgeable about safe and appropriate use of common chemical-based products found in the scenic shop, including solvents, fillers, paints, adhesives, and epoxies.
- Work with the Fabrication Manager to identify scheduling needs.
- Lead onsite teams when required, with load-ins, scenic installations, and strikes.
- Work late nights, overtime, and weekends during busy seasons to complete projects on time.
- Lift 50+ lbs.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned by MEI.
Qualifications:
- Leading carpenters and teams onsite.
- Working with theatrical construction and finish paint techniques.
- Self-starter with the ability to learn and adapt based on the needs of a given production.
- Ability to work in an active environment requiring standing, sitting, bending, climbing, crouching, and kneeling, often for extended periods.
- Knowledge of a wide range of tools & materials including- metal, woodworking, welding, and CNC.
- The ability to read working technical drawings.
- Must be proficient in computer skills, email, and operating inventory tracking systems.
- Reliable transportation to & from the shop as well as onsite event locations.
