Elgin Pelican Street Sweeper Streets & Sidewalk Dept.
Summary Objective
Under occasional supervision, operates a variety of heavy and light equipment and trucks in the construction, maintenance and/or repair of City properties, which may include grounds, roads and bridges, rights-of-way and/or drainage structures. Performs related work as required.
- Operate an Elgin Pelican street sweeper to clean City streets, gutters, and alleyways along assigned routes.

Essential Functions
The essential functions listed below are those that represent most of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Operates street sweepers and other related heavy equipment and tools to sweeps streets, gutters, mediums, parking lots, courtyards and public works yard; transports trash to the transfer station; clears debris from right-of-ways; cleans storm drains and inlets; identifies and reports hazardous conditions.
- Adjusts and operates brooms, guards, and other related auxiliary equipment; changes brooms as necessary.
- Inspects sweeper for safety and mechanical defects; checks fuel, fluid levels, air pressure and hydraulic systems; performs preventive maintenance and reports the need for required maintenance; inspects auxiliary equipment for proper operating condition and safety.
- Washes and cleans sweeper and auxiliary equipment as necessary.
- Responds to emergency clean-ups including spills; performs special sweeps as necessary.
- Maintains a variety of records and reports on street sweeping operations; logs daily reports.
- Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment including explaining street sweeping operations; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
- Create and complete work orders for routes and activities.
- Clean and maintain the sweeper.
- Perform general maintenance work as required.
- Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff, and the public.
- Operates a variety of light and heavy automotive, construction or related equipment as required, which may include a bush hog, various mowers and tractors, backhoe, excavator, dump truck, loader, motor grader, roller, tractor trailer, pickup truck, etc.
- Uses equipment to prepare building sites for exterior site concrete such as parking lots, driveways, sidewalks.
- Uses equipment for various tasks, which may include hauling and moving materials; excavating earth; grading sites; scraping roads; digging and backfilling trenches.
- Inspects and fuels vehicle prior to beginning shift.
- Utilizes various types of small equipment and hand and power tools in the performance of duties, which may include chainsaws, cement/asphalt cut saw.
- Uses various tools, which may include grounds maintenance tools and supplies, transit, level, measuring devices, etc.
- Loads equipment and materials onto / off trucks and trailers.
- Inspects machinery and equipment daily to ensure proper condition for the completion of daily responsibilities; performs minor repairs and maintenance, including washing, greasing, fueling, etc.; ensures bolts, hoses and pins are properly secured.
- Performs duties in accordance with all division policies, procedures, and standards of quality and safety.
- Mixes, pours and spreads concrete, asphalt, dirt, gravel and other materials in the maintenance and repair of streets, drainage systems and green spaces.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, other City personnel, co-workers, and the general public.
- Will be designated to report to work during hazardous weather or emergency conditions.
- Performs related work as may be required.

Pay: $18.91 - $23.09 per hour
