The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) will work under the general supervision of the Medical Director to perform forensic nurse exams of children 2 – 17 years old and coordinates medical assessments for children as needed.
A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is a Registered Nurse who has been specially trained to provide comprehensive care to adults, adolescents, and children who have been impacted by sexual assault, intimate partner violence, child abuse, elder abuse, human trafficking, and non-intentional trauma. The SANE will be responsible for staffing the Multi-Disciplinary Team, providing medical exams to children who present with forensic healthcare needs, and maintaining chain of custody with medical documentation and storage. The SANE is also responsible for testifying as an expert witness in civil and criminal court; provide education/outreach to the community at large. The SANE will interface with medical professionals, law enforcement agencies, criminal justice, victim advocacy, and external support agencies that provide services to victims of crime and violence.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducts a medical forensic exam to include evaluation for further medical assessment in a trauma informed way.
- Takes a medical history and documents history of the assault/abuse
- Provides professional and compassionate forensic evidence collection when needed
- Ensures evidence is collected according to the highest professional standard
- Collects and preserves all evidence, collects relevant specimens, and documents findings.
- Refers to appropriate personnel/facility for further treatment as necessary.
- Communicates with victims and their families regarding medical evaluation process
- Prepares report on examination and case tracking reports
- Maintain CACTX standards
- Works with the multidisciplinary team to ensure that guidelines being used to determine which children should be referred for a medical evaluation are up to date and consistent with best practices.
- Builds and maintains collaborative working relationships with medical partners and local hospitals as appropriate
- Works with the MDT Enhancement Program to screen intakes and determine if children meet the criteria for a medical evaluation
- Contacting appropriate partner agencies to discuss the need for a medical evaluation
- Schedule medical evaluations
- Providing or arranging medical accompaniment
- Following up with medical providers to confirm that a medical evaluation took place
- Accurately tracking the medical evaluation data and providing status updates to team members
- Communicating with medical providers to collect data and information for medical evaluations that took place prior to CAC services
- Attend MDT Case Review meetings
- Assist law enforcement agencies with required paperwork related to medical evaluations as appropriate
- Assess barriers that prevent children from accessing medical evaluations and working with partner agencies to address them
- Other duties as appropriate and/or assigned
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
- Two years of experience as a Registered Nurse (RN)
- Two years working with children or a pediatric setting
- Minimum one-year experience as a SANE
- State licensure as a RN
- Certification as Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) - Adult and Pediatric
EDUCATION:
- Associate’s Degree in Nursing is required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing a plus.
