POSITION OVERVIEW
Do you enjoy bringing people together for fun? Are you excited to help others grow their professional skills or explore an interest while working towards saving lives all within our local animal shelter? Are you ready to lead others to an exciting place of personal fulfillment while escaping the day-to-day routine of work or school? If your answer is yes to these questions this is the place for you! As our Volunteer Coordinator, you will recruit, motivate, inspire and retain volunteers willing to donate their time for little to no compensation to help the residents of PVAS. Your focus will include creating a volunteer recruitment and retention plan, tracking hours, volunteer training, and placement within the shelter. All activities will embrace our shelter's mission and values. Bringing the community together at PVAS to be included in our programs, and to be a part of the things we do daily to help us save lives is your jam! Our volunteer coordinator is often the main point of contact with the public, responsible for managing and supervising large groups of volunteers. Much of the PVAS's success depends on volunteers and relies on a Coordinator’s ability to motivate others to support the mission.
AGE REQUIREMENT Minimum age requirement is 21 years old.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
● High school diploma or equivalent required.
● BSc/BA in business administration, human resources, social studies or relevant field preferred
● Valid Driver's License and Good driving record
● Bilingual in verbal conversation and written, in Spanish and English
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
● Animal welfare background is desirable, but not required.
● Experience in recruiting through various outlets
● Experience in volunteering
● Strong communication and management skills
● Intermediate Computer skills required
PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS
● Positive attitude and genuinely enjoys working with people and animals.
● Can work unaffected in a busy and noisy environment.
● Strong organizational skills required.
● Must be comfortable on camera and at public speaking events to share the shelter’s mission with potential volunteers.
● Must be available to work weekends to be considered for the position.
● Ability to work in an animal care facility where euthanasia is performed. However, we are now classified as a No-Kill facility with a save rate of 90%.
● Physical Effort: May require lifting and carrying animals, items, and food bags (will be assisted by other staff members). Walk, stand, or sit for extended periods of time; extended periods of screen time.
● Working conditions: Pets are present in office areas, and will be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, and animal excrement at times. May be exposed to bites, scratches, and zoonotic diseases.
COORDINATOR EXPECTATIONS
● Source and recruit volunteers through various techniques (databases, e-mail, social media, etc.)
● Collect information on availabilities and skills
● Assign responsibilities to the right people for special events
● Communicate frequently with volunteers to ensure they are feeling connected to PVAS, are able to see the results of their efforts, and are able to fulfill their personal goals set by volunteering.
● Provide ongoing assistance, training sessions, coaching, and moral support to current volunteers
● Collaborate with other departments (Adoptions, Admissions, Lifesaving, etc) to coordinate volunteer opportunities and available projects.
● Maintain and oversee community service volunteer opportunities, ensuring that they meet and agree with the standards set by Hidalgo County Probation
Services
● Distribute information for upcoming actions and events
● Continuously improve Volunteer impact by tracking and analyzing the
appropriate data, insights and best practices, and then acting on the information
● Take and gather pictures of “Volunteers in action” with pets or projects, regularly in the shelter. Write appropriate content to accompany the pictures in recruiting material.
COMMUNICATIONS EXPECTATIONS
● Report on data associated with volunteer impact
● Attend meetings as set by the Lifesaving Manager.
● Keep the manager apprised of the good, bad, and ugly including any/all failed marketing efforts or negative outcomes.
● Communicate with the manager all recruiting plans monthly.
● Communicate with the manager all effort results monthly.
● Other duties as assigned
