This new position is responsible for maintenance and implementation of computer software, hardware and advanced clinical systems involved in providing optimal medication management.
The informatics Pharmacist specializes in the health informatics of medication-related patient care. The role of an informatics pharmacist is to improve how health care and IT professionals use data to optimize health care decisions and patient care.
Pharmacy informatics an integral discipline within the clinical informatics domain, centered on the effective management and delivery of medication related data, information, and knowledge across systems that support the medication use process.
Duties include:
· Evaluating health information systems and helping to implement improvements.
· Establishing metrics for determining the status of a health information system as it relates to medication.
· Collaborating with health care and IT professionals to optimize the use of technology in medication administration and record-keeping.
· Understanding, reporting and presenting health care data to improve how well and accurately health care professionals administer medication.
An informatics pharmacist needs a variety of hard and soft skills common to professionals in the health care and IT industries. Foundational skills in this profession include:
· Communication
· Problem Solving – devising ways to improve processes and data sharing practices, understand what components of a system need improvement and can determine solutions that suit the needs of everyone using the system.
· IT Skills – knowledge of terminologies relating to computer networks and infrastructures is necessary to communicate with other IT professionals, includes basic programming skills.
Informatics pharmacists use various technologies to carry-out their duties. To succeed in this profession, the individual should be familiar and skilled with the tools, software systems and technological practices common to the field.
Knowledge of pharmacy practice and safe medication use, combined with their understanding of informatics concepts, methods, and tools, provides the framework for effectively leading and participating in the procurement, customization, development, implementation, management, evaluation, and continuous improvement of clinical information systems.
1. Masters Degree/PharmD Current NYS Pharmacist License and Registration.
3. Excellent communication skills.
4. Extensive knowledge of legal and regulatory standards of hospital pharmacy.
5. Minimum of 2 - years’ experience in a hospital pharmacy experience.
