Job Overview
The Teacher Special Education will provide instruction in academic, behavior, social and self-care skills to students with disabilities using a variety of teaching techniques, materials, and equipment. Teachers in this job role will serve as Teacher of Record in any special education program, to include the Resource setting and other specialized programs (SAILS, ABC, BSS, ECSE, FLaSH, CLaSS, ATS). Teachers will be responsible for developing and implementing the student's IEP as well as participating in ARD meetings. Teachers will receive oversight of instructional planning and practices for content area instruction.
Position Description
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional
-
Conduct instructional and other professional activities consistent with the requirements of state and federal laws
- Safeguard confidentiality with regard to students with disabilities
- Work collaboratively with parents, students, and school/community personnel in the development of clear, measurable Individual Educational Plan (IEP) goals and objectives that are aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)
- Apply knowledge of human development and disabilities to plan and implement appropriate curriculum with appropriate modifications and adaptations
- Document ongoing student progress and maintain accurate records
- Use various types of assessment procedures appropriately
- Prepare lesson plans, in collaboration with content area teachers, that are developmentally and age-appropriate based on the student IEP
- Prepare and organize materials to implement daily lesson plans
- Direct and oversee the activities of an educational setting paraprofessional, aide, volunteer, or peer tutor
- Use appropriate adaptive equipment and assistive technology as recommended by related service providers to facilitate learning, communication, mobility and positioning
- Fully implement students’ IEPs, including behavior intervention plans and accommodations/modifications of materials and curriculum
- Participate in and/or prepare paperwork for Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) meetings
- Participate in appropriate professional development activities as required or assigned
- Provide for basic needs of students who, because of their disability, are not able to care for themselves including but not limited to toilet and feeding
If the position is tied to coaching a UIL sport, the following essential duties and responsibilities are applicable to coaching:-
Perform coaching duties as assigned as well as other duties required for the smooth, efficient operation of a successful athletic program

Possess knowledge and adhere to UIL rules and regulations

Assist the Athletic Department with budget, schedules, care/use of facilities

Communicate with the Athletic Department on a regular basis

Qualification Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Education or related field
- Valid Special Education Certification SPED EC-12
- Crisis Prevention Intervention Certification preferred, if teaching in a specialized program
- Valid Driver's license with CDL Certification preferred, if coaching in a UIL sport
- Valid Texas Teacher Certification must obtain content certification aligned to assignment within one year of hire date
- Must attend all scheduled preparation classes, trainings, and professional development provided by the District relating to this position.
- Ability to plan and implement lessons based on needs and abilities of students

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
- Demonstrated knowledge of appropriate technology equipment and software programs
- Proven ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs

The position requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying work related items weighing less than 40 pounds, such as books, papers and presentation materials. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties. May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.
