Position Overview
The Texas Association of Counties (TAC) is seeking a qualified person for a Risk Control Consultant I – Southwest Region position. Partner with TAC Risk Management Pool (TAC RMP) members to deliver risk control consulting services within the assigned region.
This includes consultations, review and analysis of losses and claims, risk assessments, training programs, and inspections and surveys related to their coverages. Collaborate with the Risk Management Services (RMS) regional team to identify potential service needs and recommend risk mitigation strategies that contribute to improved member outcomes. The role requires frequent travel up to 80% of the time.
This position will be assigned to service members in the Southwest Region of the state. This region runs along the Texas border just north of the Rio Grande Valley up to San Antonio, northwest towards Midland/Odessa and west towards El Paso. The ideal candidate would live in the region, but consideration will be given all qualified candidates. Relocation assistance or reassignment to another region is not available currently.
Essential Functions
- Deliver risk control consultations and related services to TAC RMP members, adhering to Risk Control Services (RCS) divisional standards. Generate and submit reports within the Division’s designated system for record-keeping per established timelines.
- Generate reports in a timely manner for internal and external customers. Submit reports of member interactions in the Division’s designated system for record-keeping per established timelines.
- Conduct on-site TAC RMP member consultations, requiring frequent overnight stays (up to 80% travel time). Independently plan and manage travel effectively. Submit all expense and mileage reports per established timelines.
- Contribute to development and delivery of presentations on risk management and safety topics at TAC-related educational events. Represent TAC RMP at conferences, staffing booths for county officials and employees.
- Recognize emerging trends, legislation, and regulatory changes impacting risk management and safety. Communicate relevant information to assigned members to ensure awareness. Contribute to the development of best practices for the Risk Control (RC) Consultant team to deliver effective technical assistance. Provide support for the creation of educational materials including articles, presentations, tools, guides, and resources for members and online dissemination.
- Participate actively in team and departmental projects and program development initiatives.
- Strive to improve customer service through solutions and interactions to TAC and TAC RMP members, staff, and the public.
- Additional responsibilities as required.
Education/Experience
- A bachelor's degree in business administration, occupational health and safety, science, engineering, or a related field; or
- At least three years of risk control experience in occupational health and safety or risk management; related experience working with county or other governmental entities preferred.
- Risk control or risk management-related professional designations or certifications desired.
Other Skills, Knowledge, and Requirements
- This is member facing role and as a requirement for this position you agree to sign the TAC Photo/Video Release Form allowing the use of your picture, likeness, image, and/or voice recording videos, and other posts to TAC social media accounts, webpages, promotional, and educational materials.
- Basic knowledge of risk management and safety programs, risk mitigation techniques, and risk control specific to public works and other public sector operations.
- Understanding of related federal and state laws and standards, including but not limited to OSHA, National Fire Protection Association, driving and transportation, and Hazard Communication.
- Ability to assess risk exposures impacting facility protection and workplace safety.
- Proficiency in adult learning strategies for diverse audiences, experience in developing and delivering engaging training.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, effectively connecting with individuals from varied backgrounds
- High degree of professionalism and ability to represent the organization effectively in all interactions.
- Good time management and record-keeping abilities.
- Highly motivated and able to manage workload effectively with minimal oversight following established guidelines.
- Experience in independently planning and scheduling travel for work assignments.
- Valid Texas driver's license and clean driving record required; ability to operate an assigned vehicle for frequent business travel is essential.
Physical Requirements
- This position requires extensive weekly overnight travel.
- Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods while driving and conducting inspections or assessments.
- Potential for climbing and walking on rooftops and in tight spaces, requiring agility and balance.
- Lifting or moving boxes and equipment up to 50 pounds, demanding physical strength and endurance.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, reaching, squatting, and stair climbing, necessitating good physical fitness and flexibility.
- Exposure to extreme weather conditions during travel or outdoor work, requiring appropriate attire and adaptability.

Pay: $80,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
