This is an onsite position located in Champaign, IL. We do not offer nor provide relocation assistance.
The Chemist I will be responsible for conducting routine tests following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Work Instructions for various systems within the lab that are utilized to generate isotope data of various sample types, and compositional data for natural gas samples. May include operation of GC systems, isotope ratio mass spectrometer systems and their associated preparation devices, vacuum systems, liquid scintillation counters, and CRDS laser systems. Must be able to operate and maintain the equipment while working independently, and work with the other analysts and take direction from management and senior chemists. Will ensure that all data is QC’d to the highest standards and consult with other team members if any potential sources of error are discovered. May be required to operate equipment in the Champaign facility, as well as equipment deployed at satellite lab locations.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Take direction from management and senior chemists.
- QC data and import into central database.
- May operate gas chromatograph systems to determine chemical makeup of natural gas samples.
- May operate vacuum systems to prepare samples for isotopic analysis.
- May analyze gas samples on GC-C-IRMS systems for δ13C and δD.
- May analyze solids and liquids using EA-IRMS and TCEA-IRMS systems for δ13C, δ15N, δD, δ18O, and δ34S isotope ratios.
- May operate dual inlet IRMS systems to measure δ13C and δD isotope ratios.
- Suggest and implement improvements to the company’s laboratory operations and instrument development
- May use CRDSlaser system to generate δD and δ18O isotope ratios of water.
- May prepare water samples for determination of tritium content by liquid scintillation counter.
- Maintain and calibrate equipment.
- Work from home to correspond with technicians and operate equipment at satellite lab locations may be required.
- May work with compressed gas samples.
- Expected to work 40 hours per work, but overtime may be required.
- Maintain lab equipment as required for safe and accurate use.
- Work assignments carried out to the highest quality level.
- Perform various other duties and activities as assigned by supervisor within the physical constraints of the job.
- Must understand and comply with all safety rules and company policies of Stratum.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
- Personal computer skills
- Knowledge of chemical processes and laboratory techniques
Minimum Experience:
- BS or MS Degree in Chemistry, Geochemistry, or related science field
- Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications
- General chemical industry knowledge
