Under the direction of the Assistant Detention Administrator, is responsible for managing, supervising and coordinating the operational, support or compliance activities of the Detention Center. The Captain will plan, organize and direct the activities in their assigned areas of responsibility of the Curry County Detention Center Facility to ensure the health, safety and welfare of detainees and the continuous safe and secure operations of the facility. Must show upright leadership skills, attend all supervisor meetings, make recommendations for improvement, deal with personnel issues and counsel and/or reprimand when necessary, maintain reports and daily documentation, and be responsible for daily inmate movement and activities. This position supervises other supervisors. The position plans overall work objectives; established department goals and objectives; coordinates diverse work activities and programs; measures performance against goals and objectives.
Minimum Qualifications- High School Diploma or G.E.D. Some higher education preferred.
- At least three (3) years of experience in detention, law enforcement and/or military; and at least two (2) as a Supervisor in Adult and/or Juvenile Detention Facility.
- Must be able to understand, communicate, read and write in English. Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Must have no felony convictions or pending convictions.
- Valid NM Driver’s License. No DWI conviction within the past three (3) years.
- Must successfully complete pre-employment drug screen, physical and background check.
- Must be able to pass CPR and First Aid.
- Must be able to handle stress and respond appropriately to stressful situations.
- Must be able to write intelligibly, complete reports, deal with situations requiring tact, understanding and good judgment.
- Remain alert at all times and respond quickly in emergency situations.
- Establish good working relationship with inmates and other staff members.
- Ability to perform all essential duties as listed below.
- Ability to perform the essential duties in the working conditions described below.
- Ability to work with the equipment, tools and materials listed below.
- Must comply with safety guidelines and policies of the County.
- Must be knowledgeable of the Curry County Adult and Juvenile Detention Policies and New Mexico Association of Counties Detention Standards.
- Curry County contributes 20.66% and employee contributes 5.79% each pay period into the Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA)
- Curry County pays 75% of medical premiums. Dental, Vision and Disability Insurance offered as well.
- Curry County provides a $50,000 life insurance policy for all employees. Dependent and Spouse Life Insurance Benefits available.
- 12.5 paid Holidays per year.
