SCOPE
South Bronx United Inc. (SBU) is a sports-based youth development organization that uses soccer as a tool for social change. Its mission is to prepare youth to succeed in high school, college, careers, their community and beyond. SBU serves more than 1,300 boys and girls annually through programming on the field and in the classroom, including academic enrichment and tutoring, college prep, mentoring, leadership development, health and wellness, immigration legal services, and other individual and family supports. The majority of youth served are from immigrant families and many were born outside of the country. While the South Bronx has the nation’s highest poverty rate and low educational outcomes, SBU makes a significant difference in the lives of its youth. In the last five years, 100 percent of youth in the organization’s core program, the SBU Academy, have graduated high school, 94 percent have graduated in four years, and 94 percent have gone on to attend college.
South Bronx United seeks a Development Officer who will focus on individual giving and events. The position will manage South Bronx United’s fundraising team and operations—including database management, preparation and coordination of donor communications and solicitations, and gift processing. The position will work collaboratively with the Executive Director and the development team as well as program staff to increase funding for the organization in order to help SBU sustain and expand its impact.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Core responsibilities for the Development Officer position include the following:
1. Work with the Executive Director to cultivate major gift donors.
- Work with the Development Coordinator in managing the donor database and pipeline of major gift donors.
- Manage the calendar of donor communications.
- Set up the Executive Director to communicate with existing and prospective donors.
- Manage intimate events for significant donors.
2. Manage pool of donor prospects and existing donors and oversee day-to-day donor operations.
- Build relationships with and directly solicit a pool of key donors and prospects through email, phone and in-person meetings.
- Draft and process large and small-scale donor communications and appeals.
- Oversee regular donor communications and mailings, including receipts, and acknowledgment letters.
- Support Development Coordinator in managing donor tracking and relationships through a Salesforce database.
- Supervise data entry for gifts, pledges, and grants and prepare fundraising reports. including contact and giving history. Coordinate with the fiscal team to track incoming donations and prepare financial reports.
3. Strategize, plan, and execute fundraising events including the Annual Benefit, the Charity Cup, and donor cultivation events.Research prospects, including individuals, corporations and foundations.
- Work with staff and board to set and achieve fundraising targets.
- Maintain guest lists, gather and prepare all materials, and liaise with event support.
- Solicit potential donors, in-kind donors, and sponsors.
- Communicate with committee members and supervise staff and volunteers.
- Coordinate with event vendors, caterers, production personnel, sponsors, and in-kind donors.
- Coordinate post-event communications with donors.
4. Collaborate with the Executive Director in working with the Board of Directors.
- Cultivate support from individual board members and provide them with regular updates on their contributions.
- Facilitate gifts and introductions from board members.
- Work with Development Coordinate to facilitate the Supporters Club Board activities, fundraising, and successes.
- Work with the SBU Supporters Club Board and the Board of Directors to promote engagement and support development activities.
5. Prospect for new funding opportunities that may good fits for supporting SBU's programs.
- Manage the development timeline including grant deadlines, events, program site visits.
- Research prospects, including individuals, corporations and foundations.
- Conduct ongoing research in business, philanthropy and related fields to identify potential donors and sources of donor information.
- Cultivate relationships with corporate funders, through regular communications and corporate volunteer events.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
A strong candidate should meet the following requirements:
- 5 years of development experience with a nonprofit organization or institution, with at least 2 years of direct solicitation experience
- Experience in development planning, major gifts, annual gifts, special events, capital campaigns, and stewardship
- Self-motivated problem-solver; exceptionally organized, detail-oriented, and optimistic
- Strong communicator with good interpersonal skills and customer service sense
- First-rate writing skills
- Entrepreneurial spirit
- Adept at skillfully partnering with program staff; and able to quickly assimilate knowledge about South Bronx United and its work
- A passion for the mission and programs of South Bronx United and the broader community
- An ability to work in diverse, multi-cultural settings
SCHEDULE
Full-time, primarily in-person
