Primary areas of responsibility include:
- Perform related tasks such as grinding, cleaning, moving material, etc.
- Maintain work and work area in a neat and orderly manner.
- Observe company work, safety and personnel policies.
- Detect faulty equipment and report same to supervisor.
- Refer questionable cases to supervisor.
- Perform these and other duties as instructed.
- Wear all appropriate personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, welding shield,
- goggles, gloves, etc.)
- Always ensure that ventilation is adequate for welding.
- Use welding equipment only within its rated capacity.
- Be careful to avoid shock when changing welding electrodes.
- Do not handle electrode holder from two different machines at the same time.
- Stay clear of welding cables.
- Do not wear rings, wristbands, or other jewelry.
- Do not change polarity of a welding machine while welding is in progress.
- Always carry electrodes in a quiver or similar carrier.
- Remove electrodes from the holders when not in use.
- Do not weld in or near areas where there may be flammable materials, explosive gasses or vapors.
- Daily perform visual inspection of all leads, cables, holders, etc. and notify supervisor of worn or damaged equipment.
- Do not burn rods down too close to the holder (leave approximately three inches).
Qualifications and Requirements
- Certified and capable of productive, acceptable quality groove, lap butt, end and fillet welding in stick, sub arc, innershield and outershield welding as demonstrated by practical experience. (Flat, Horizontal, and Vertical Positions).
- Capable of machine set up including removing or attaching appropriate equipment to prepare for sub arc or inner shield welding.
- Capable of automatic or semiautomatic welding, i.e., cover plate welding stiffener welding, electroslag welding, etc. Also, capable of the appropriate machine set ups and troubleshooting.
- Capable of hand and machine burning including bevel burning after initial track set up is made. Likewise, can operate welding guns, tracks and buggo equipment after initial set up is made.
- Capable of performing work on a variety of columns, trusses, plate girders, etc.
- Able to read normal blueprints to determine weld symbol instructions fillet, far side, near side, etc.
- Capable of preparing pre-qualified joints for full penetration welding and capable of performing appropriate arc gouging competently.
- Capable of performing x-ray quality welding in all 4 processes.
- May occasionally direct work of other less qualified welders within assigned work area.
- Capable of all other duties described in lower welder classifications.
- High school diploma
- Two plus years of fabrication experience
- Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds
- Bending, lifting, and twisting are required to perform job.
- Good Mathematical skills
