Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated Shelter Advocate to join our team in providing essential support and care to survivors of domestic violence. This role requires a compassionate individual with a strong commitment to assisting vulnerable populations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Social Services related field
- Excellent customer service skills
- Bilingual Spanish, preferred
- In addition, candidates must possess a valid Florida driver’s license, safe driving record, and proof of automobile liability insurance
- Genuinely helpful and sympathetic towards participants
Experience:
- 2 years of experience working in the domestic violence field
- Previous experience in shelter advocacy or related field preferred
- Proficiency in crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques
- Strong data entry skills with attention to detail
Other required:
- Comfortable in the presence of pets
- Comfortable driving a 15 passenger van
Responsibilities:
The Residential Advocate will provide supportive, trauma-informed and survivor - directed advocacy services for domestic violence survivors in Women In Distress' Emergency Shelter program.
Utilizing best practice models to provide trauma-informed direct services to survivors of domestic violence, Advocates provide the following to residents: facilitate individual support services with participants to include but not limited to the registration and intake process, answering crisis calls on the hotline and provide guidance, crisis counseling, individual counseling, service or case management activities to assess needs and assist in developing individualized goal plans, crisis de-escalation, safety planning, file reviews, proper timely documentation, and facilitation of support groups. Will maintain current and accurate records and files through proper chart documentation and/or data entry. Maintain inventory protocols and stocking pantry, comfortable interacting with pets.
Candidates will utilize the empowerment model and maintain a non-judgmental attitude towards participant’s decisions. Models non-violent conflict resolution and takes appropriate steps to deal with emergency situations with the goal of maintaining the safety of all residents.
The Residential Advocate will ensure that all services provided are empowerment-based and are consistent with Department of Children and Family (DCF) standards.
Management may assign or reassign duties and responsibilities at any time.
Additional requirements: Employee will be required to take the Department of Children and Families (DCF) Core Competency training and obtain a passing grade of 75% or higher.
